RSS Feeds - What They Are and Why You Like Them

6/18/2007 09:51:00 AM

It's been said, “There are two types of Internet users. Those who use RSS feeds, and those who don't.”

The topic of RSS feeds came up at the Blogging Panel I participated in last week and the question didn't get enough time on the docket. So, for any new friends tuning in from that venue, or for anyone else who's a little timid and unsure how to approach RSS, check out this fun, and casual three minute video by Lee LeFever describing RSS in plain English. It could change the way you stay updated with online content.

Now, if that smooth vid helped things along and you think you might want to try it out, subscribe to the Chase Jarvis Blog feed, complements of Feedburner. Or, if you want to check out a nifty tutorial on using RSS with the Safari browser, here's quick post on that compliments of CreativeTechs, complete with animation. Incidentally, CreativeTechs were the inspiration for this post too.

Lastly, if you think all this is nuts ("it's Monday -- I don't have time to learn new stuff!") but want to receive Chase Jarvis Blog updates in your inbox instead, just throw your email addy in the rectangle in the upper right corner and click 'subscribe'.

(Depending on your reader, RSS folk can get the vid here.)

I recommend using Bloglines. it's a pretty great way of accessing and organizing your RSS feeds, and since it's web-based, you can read it anywhere you have a browser.

That is awesome! RSS has totally changed the way I interact with the internet, especially blogs. I can't imagine being without it.

You know, I've tried a couple of readers, but I never took to RSS. Yeah, I get annoyed to find that my niece has not updated her blog in two weeks and I might be saved that aggravation, but it also forces me to limit the number of blogs in my bookmarks to ones that I find I actually want to visit. With IE7, I love the tab option to open up a bunch of sites at once, and then leisurely cruise through them.

We all find our own habits.

Thanks again Chase for a great presentation.

Finnster - good point about bloglines. I primarily use Google Reader, but it's just because I'm lazy on looking for "best" solution on things that already seem to serve most of my needs until I'm directed to do otherwise. I'll go check bloglines - access from any browser/hosted online seems nice...

Doug: Tabbing is the only way to go once you're looking at full sites... I totally understand that RSS is not for everyone, however reading your method and having heard from you at the panel, I might suggest giving RSS one more try - imagine... What if you never had to go to your niece's site until she updated it; and then, when she did, you were the first visitor because your reader pinged you instantly?? Surely unlce Doug would score some points being the first to visit, leave comments, etc ;)

Sounds like you're on the windows platform and that google reader or bloglines might do you right...

I actually have been using the News Reader that is built into the Flock webbrowser. It works pretty darn well. Thanks Chase!
