Chase Jarvis SHORTS: Pimped Photography Van

6/18/2008 11:00:00 PM

Heading into a recent commercial job in San Diego, we were a little underpowered. Our staff Digital Asset Management guru, Dartanyon, was tied to the studio on some other business and as a result we needed some more DAM muscle on the road--and quick! A phone call later, our problem was solved...

Enter stage right: The Digital Capture Systems pimped-out digital photography uber-van. Enter stage left: a new video series titled Chase Jarvis SHORTS, where I'll share some short, behind-the-scenes and off-the-wall tidbit videos that might be of interest. To get photos and the details about this cool pimped-out photography van, click the 'continue reading' link below...

Digital Capture Systems is: a couple of burly MacPros, a handful of big ol' 30" displays, a whole bunch of redundant storage, a ton of tech widgets and wingdings, a savvy guy who graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography (Carson) to run the ones and zeros, and a totally pimped out, enviro-friendly custom Dodge Sprinter van to haul it all. Not only did the van help with our digital assets, it also helped out with wardrobe and gave us on location editing just minutes after we nailed a particular shot. I applaud these Digital Capture Systems guys on their uber-van concept, and I love the business they've built around it. They did a great job on our gig, and I chatted with my friend Vince LaForet who just used them as well, and he said everything went really well. Here are a few behind-the-scenes snapshots from our week working with them:

Several of us jammed in there reviewing files from one of the days.

Late night review in the van.

Owner Carson Blume working on his laptop on the roof.

Carson working.

Van stocked with the wardrobe for the evening. I swear that little van can hold a TON of stuff!

Seems like every major city should have one of these things!

I'll take 2! In this day and age one always needs a backup when talking digital :) This is a very sweet setup. I wonder if photo pimping your vehicle will be the next fad versus pimping out the audio in your car. In all seriousness I'm green with envy on this setup.

i think you should transform the denali to be a mobile photo SUV, especially with a couple 30's...and maybe a few 40's too, but only for the stevens shoot.

Chase, I know you covered it in a previous post but the fact that Carson let us eat bruschetta and drink negronis in his bazillion dollar setup was pretty cool too. Thanks, Carson!

Beats my car hands down, with 3g dongle hanging out the window, wacom tablet on the steering wheel and laptop on the passenger seat.

You get a hell of crick neck after reviewing all those shots. Fast food wrappers are a neccessity as well.

Sleeping system is the back seat.

Definately want one of those vans.

I can see Chase spending some money on his own DAM vehicle

Dartagn A***e Mover LOL

I second Gary's negroni comment...Carson, you've got balls letting people drink those with all of that equipment lying about!

My favorite image was seeing Carson up on top of that van, clinging to the solar panels, whilst wiping them crystal-clean with windex and a paper towels!

FYI. As much as i love the blog, I often catch up on reading using my cell phone (in this case Moto Q PDA) anyway when reading the blog there is no 'continue reading' button.
I.ll catch up when i get in front of a computer.

very interesting setup

i must say, im impressed!

to fit enough gear that would be better suited for an entire mobile home into one oversized van is a feat in itself nevermind dong it well!

cheers!

by the way... "shorts"... clever. I like it. I look forward to more of these :)

Hi Chase!

Really appreciate your Internet presence, but don't you think you might look a bit like touting (especially Apple)? I mean, their displays are pretty average and calling them "super sweet" is an overstatement. They're OK, but not as good as Eizo's ColorEdge CG301W.

Besides, where's some huge WiFi antenna that would capture shots off the air? I mean, the company is called Digital Capture :)

Generally, the van is mildly impressive if you compare it to the TV and film industry stuff. Sure the realms are different, but I'd expect more from the "pimped van", especially in the area of connectivity.

After all, it's really fun to watch your videos, so keep making them! :)

Cheers

@ dartkanion: I know what you mean when comparing this van to TV stuff, but what this van should really be compared to is that most photographers roll like this on the better end of things, and like this on the worse end of things ...so having the DCS van is almost otherworldly ;)

Thank you everyone for the kind words, and than you Chase and Cody for the vid, it rocks of course, . I would be a hypocrite if I did not let people eat and drink in the van since we spend the better part of our days in it.

Gary, we will be back in SD the 3rd week in july, Drinks?

It was such a pleasure to work with Chase and the crew at, Chase Inc!

dartkanion: I chose the apple monitors because they are economical for the size and pass the savings on the the clients, our van is almost never the final word before the press, plus we work by the numbers. We actuality have a ColorEdge at the office for final proofing, and as far as "touting apple" its, a. for good reason, and b. I think Chase is just showing what we have.
