Introducing My First Book: Stevens Pass

For the first time, I’m publishing a book of photographs to share directly with the public, and it is available right now. Titled simply Stevens Pass, this limited-edition coffee table book (only 2500 copies) is a collection of images from Stevens Pass , an homage to one of Washington’s favorite ski destinations and a celebration of the resort’s 70 seasons of operation. I learned to ski at Stevens Pass 30 years ago and have been fortunate to maintain a strong connection with the mountain ever since. Having photographed there for 10 winters, this book is the humble fruit of that labor.

THE BOOK:
The 11 X 11 inch hardback coffee table book is 112 pages and sells for $35. Each copy purchased from this site will be signed at no extra charge. You can buy the book here. Signed copies are only available from this site and at one regional book signing event, below. Non-signed books will be available at select Seattle-area outdoor retailers, ski & board shops, and at Seattle’s independent book stores.

THE EVENT: To help launch the book, we’re hosting a multimedia slide show and book signing event next Friday, October 17th at the Seattle REI at 7pm (Store event link here). Admission is FREE. The show will feature a range of still images from my work, as well as images from the book and some behind the scenes video. Space is limited to 250 guests and it is anticipated that it will fill to capacity, so I recommend that you arrive early. Books will be available for purchase at the event, food and nibblies will be served, and we’re also hosting a fundraiser for the Northwest Avalanche Center – with a raffle and auction for season passes and schwag.

For additional information, please visit the micro-site for the book (you can buy it direct there) and the official press release here. This book is a limited-edition publication and sold on a first come, first served basis. Please share this website and related information with your family and friends.

Click the ‘continue reading’ link below to see a brand new and very special Chase Jarvis FRAMES video after the jump. This one is aimed at showing the huge amount of work and huge numbers of images that go into just a handful of great ski and snowboard images. You’ll also get to read what some critics ski and snowboard friends are saying about the book…

AND SURPRISE, ANOTHER VIDEO: And now, to help me ring in winter and, ahem, to get you pumped up to buy the book, please join me in indulging in this latest video, Chase Jarvis FRAMES: Pray for Snow. It’s a collection of 3954 still images shot mostly at Stevens Pass and stitched together in the FRAMES style. Watch this to get pumped up for the forthcoming winter season (it snowed in the Cascades yesterday!) and you’ll also see just how many frames it takes to generate a small handful of pro-quality ski and snowboard images. Spread the word.

Dig that track by The Saturday Knights? I can’t get enough of them. Buy their songs from iTunes.

“Chase’s images have always had that certain intangible quality that set them apart. It takes a photographer who really knows skiing and snowboarding to document it well, and Stevens Pass captures this beautifully… What I also love about this book is that the photos go beyond cliff hucks and deep powder. By including some beautiful scenics, some quiet moments, and images of little tykes learning to ski, Chase has made this book something that everyone can enjoy.”
- Chris Jerard Associate Publisher | Freeskier and Snowboard Magazines

“Images and moments from one of Washington’s classic ski areas, Chase’s photos provide an intimate look at contemporary NW ski and snowboard culture.”
- Jeff Galbriath, Publisher, The Ski Journal & frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal

“If a picture really is worth a thousand words than Chase Jarvis’ images from Stevens Pass go a long way toward putting us writers out of business.”
- Crai S Bower, 2008 Northern Lights Award Winning Writer

Sweet! Chalk me up for a copy. Perfect timing as I’m looking for a cool book to buy as part of my Photo Project, Buying Prints from Your Favorite Photographers. Can’t wait to check it out.

    Foo…

Really strapped for cash at the moment, but I really wanted to grab that book.. so I was breezing through the store, all hyped and ready to purchase that book right away…

Until I got to choose the shipping options. Dude, $37.00 for shipping?! Damn… I can’t really spend $70 on a book right now…

Sometimes I hate to live in Europe :-(

  5. Aleksi October 9, 2008 at 2:46 am #

Just dropped order. Little pricy to Europe but definitely must have. Great start to snowb seasno!

  6. reg October 9, 2008 at 3:46 am #

Was through the order process till I got to the shipping charges
    $ 37 dollars to Ireland?
I just got a 20 lb battery pack delivered from the Philipines for
    $ 45 shipping
I really wanted the book but sorry Chase cant justify spending more on shipping than on a (vastly underpriced)book

  7. Antonio Marques October 9, 2008 at 4:01 am #

Nice. This is one I’d really really like to have in my collection… but, $37 shipping?!? It’s more than the book price…

  8. Adam Belnap October 9, 2008 at 5:35 am #

    Gonna grab it….

But, like anyone with 2 kids under three – I am confident that the whiet cover, will not stay white if it is anywhere near my coffee tables.

How about a kryptonite cover/sleeve for an additional cost?

    LOL

I also want to comment that this book is crazy underpriced! BUt don’t change the price until I order!

(Does this use mostly natural light and on camera flash?)

  9. Chase Jarvis October 9, 2008 at 7:13 am #

@ my European Friends. Thanks for the heads up on that shipping cost. Whoa! Looking into shipping to you guys cheaper. If you can ship a battery to the Philippines for $45, we should be able to be waaaay cheaper. We’re on it and will get back to you ASAP.

  10. Nicolas October 9, 2008 at 7:31 am #

Chase, I think you are going to sell them all in a few days… As I both like skiing and your photography, I didn’t think twice when I click on the check out button. I guess you are keeping some for your launch event.
And again, for a limited edition one, it is really affordable. It will make grow your fans base, which is probably already quite big !

Thanks, can’t wait to receive mine.

  11. Shelby White October 9, 2008 at 9:50 am #

Awesome! I was wondering how long it would be till you had a gathering at REI for something like this.

Just snagged a copy. See some of you next week!

  12. ivanL October 9, 2008 at 10:11 am #

If all the books sell out online will there still be signed copies to buy at REI?

  13. Scott R. October 9, 2008 at 10:34 am #

@Ivan: We have set aside enough books for the REI event even if we sell through our stock online. Thanks for asking!

  14. Dartanyon Race October 9, 2008 at 11:07 am #

    Hi All,
I wanted to give a little update on the International Shipping thing. We have contact our shipper, and reduced the weight of the packaging enough to lower the price, we’re also going to offset the cost a bit. SO THE NEW INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING PRICE IS $23.60. I am in the process of refunding everyone who paid the higher price.
    Cheers!

  15. Viktor Arakchiev October 9, 2008 at 11:12 am #

Well, as a ski photographer myself and a huge fan of you i was stunned to read about this book. Unfortunately there is no option to buy from Bulgaria. Before you ask – this is in Europe, and yes, you have a large community of fans here, believe it or not! I have to ask a friend of mine who lives in the US to order it and then send it to me. Not cool :( Whatever, whish you luck!

  16. Dartanyon Race October 9, 2008 at 11:35 am #

    @ Viktor
Bulgaria Added! Sorry about that mate, clearly an oversight on my part. My brother actually even spent 4 weeks in lovely Bulgaria at a music festival many years ago.
    Order away!

  17. Viktor Arakchiev October 9, 2008 at 11:56 am #

WOW !!! Didn’t really expect that! That was fast! Thanks a lot! You are great!

  18. Reg October 9, 2008 at 2:08 pm #

I’m a die hard Alpental rider, but for some reason I’ve been wanting to make the trip to Stevens this year. Seeing that video makes me want to go even more. See you next Friday at the event….

  25. Anonymous October 10, 2008 at 4:18 pm #

    Chase,

what company did you use to print the book?

  26. Anonymous October 11, 2008 at 10:37 am #

    Hi Chase,

Like your other FRAMES, this one is quite nice to look at ;-)

BTW, may I ask a stupid question : how are those made ? I mean, which software ? Because it looks like the frame speed depends on the music (or is it just me ?) Kinda cool effect, and was wondering if that was hand-made or software made ;-)

    Take care,

(PS: Yep, I’m the stupid guy who misplace the same comment on another of your blog post. Sorry about that…)

  27. Chase Jarvis October 12, 2008 at 9:58 am #

@ anon: The book is self-published and was printed by Compendium Inc. They’re great people and well known for custom publishing.

  28. Chase Jarvis October 12, 2008 at 10:37 am #

@ anon: All FRAMES vids are cut together using Apple’s Final Cut Pro.

  29. boone October 13, 2008 at 1:44 am #

that white is slick! keep FRAMES comin’. lovin it.

Yo, what are we looking at Shipping wise to South Africa?

2 books in my mind – busy sorting out the details for production. One foodies, one musos.

It must be a blast. Your first book?

  31. Adam October 13, 2008 at 12:15 pm #

Thanks for the post and video. I showed this over the last 3 minutes of class today, as most kids were done with their assignment. Just fun inspiration for my high school kids!
It made us all want to go snowboarding!

  32. Houser October 13, 2008 at 6:40 pm #

Hey man… I realize this is WAY on the other coast from you, but we are organizing a little get together of our own, along the lines of your Flickr Roundup.

  34. Mackie Images October 15, 2008 at 11:28 am #

It’s great to see a photo book commemorating this area! I lived in Leavenworth two winters ago and came to realize Stevens Pass was actually a great place to ski (mostly backcountry skiing for myself.) Lots of snow and (relatively) few folks on the mountain. It’s great to see a photo book commemorating the area!

  35. shelbywhite October 17, 2008 at 9:06 pm #

Can’t wait to see the book (waiting for it in the mail).

  36. Andrew October 19, 2008 at 8:51 pm #

Got that hot book in my hands this weekend and it’s gorgeous. Sharp, inspiring photographs and a clean, disciplined format. Just as important as knowing what to include you clearly designed the book knowing what not to include. Nicely done, I’m proud to have a copy sitting on my coffee table as I type.

  37. Snead October 21, 2008 at 1:14 am #

Just got my book. Smoking hot. Classic Chase style, although surprisingly documentary and uncommercial in nature. Simple, clean, pretty pictures without excess any baggage, just as I like them.

  38. Mark Howells-Mead December 16, 2008 at 1:52 am #

Congratulations on the book; I’m not a skiier or snowboarder (despite living in Switzerland for nearly ten years) but it looks great! I am, however, a photographer and was wondering how you’re having the books printed for such a good price: have you pre-ordered? Or are you using a print-on-demand service?

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on this. We got a grab a book from our location library but I believe I learned much more clear from this post. I’m extremely glad to see such exceptional information being shared freely out there.
