Chase Jarvis CURRENT: Making The Web Work For You

11/27/2008 12:01:00 AM

In May of this year I was invited--along with photo Illuminati compadres David Hobby (Strobist) and David Nightingale (Chromasia)--to Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai, UAE to give a little chat to some photographers. The seminar was called "Making the Web Work for You". If you're at all thinking of blogging, video, the web, or sharing information, then you will pick up a thing or two, guaranteed. Keep in mind, it's almost entirely unedited. But there are some nuggets in there. Nothing flashy , just a couple of us guys talking about blogging and how we use the web in our profession. There's a Q+A session at the end as well.

I've been sitting on this for 7 months for a few reasons:
1. Busy.
2. It's long. But I figured there's no better time to watch a long chat about photography and blogs and such, than while sitting in front of your computer with a gut full of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Cue it up. Grab another piece of pie.
3. I've been waiting till the time gets nearer for the next Gulf Photo Plus, so we can start chattering about it. This coming year's event begins at the end of March, and is a spectacular learning opportunity. I then past few years, Mohammad from GPP has organized and handful of us photogs to share a few tips. Those include: Joe McNally, David Hobby, David Nightingale, Drew Gardner, Vincent LaForet, Zack Arias, Carol Dragon, Cliff Mautner, Asim Rafiqui, Chris Hurtt, Bobbi Lane, and Robin Nichols to name a few.

Happy watching.

[Update: The fine folks over at CreativeTechs.com thought this talk was quite relevant. As such, they forked out their own $$ to have all 14,000 words from this video transcribed. It's broken out into three sections, one for each Hobby, Nightingale, and yours truly. So, if you'd rather read these words, use em for school or whatever, then be sure to visit this CreativeTechs post. Thanks Craig!.]

Great content again Chase. I love following your blog and videos. David Hobby mentioned David Hadda (I think I have the spelling incorrect). Do you know his website or correct spelling?

Great insight on all points. It's incredible the power the internet has today, and how much of it is still untapped on so many levels.

This has inspired me to sit down and really finish my site, and work on all those "how to's" i've been planning to write for months now.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks to you and the two Davids this was such an amazing piece of video. You guys spelt it all out, explained how to do it and why. Guess we all need to take some inspiration from this and once we get over the 80 minutes duration think about how we can add to the worlds knowledge pool.

I'm sure that even just playing the audio from this video to a few large companies marketing depts would be beneficial for all of us.

Great vid and thanks for sharing. I was especially interested in this as I was just asked to be a part of a online photography magazine that will basically blog about the transition from amateur to pro and some of the things that go along with it (how-to's, lighting diagrams, mentor info, business practice, etc..). I've always been one to share info on my work which is part of the reason I think I was asked to join the team. But something you guys said in the video hit me on the head really hard, and that was when you all agreed that blogging to try and gain business is a sure fire failure. Well I'd be a liar if I said that gaining business was not one of the reasons I want to blog. Yes, I also like helping people learn which is why I've written how to's on my work for free and answer emails daily but it's not easy for me to fully think about helping others without the want of promoting my own business when I am not even sure how or if I'll be able to pay my next months rent. I'm still so new to the business of photography that I don't have the luxury of being financially comfortable enough to not have that worry creep into my other affairs. And I worry about heading into this now without a fully "clean heart". Any thoughts on this?

ps. if anyone would like to see a recent how-to I wrote you can check it here: http://flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157608625495414/

(I hope it's okay to share that. If not feel free to delete my comment. Happy Thanksgiving Chase and crew. Thanks for all you've given me (which is a lot!!))

It was interesting to see someone talk specifically about blogs around photography. Usually when I read how he, she or someone else made it big times through blogging it is about 'make money online', 'moms at home', etc. topic which don't really fit my "profile" (even though Darren Rowse has photography related blog as well) and how it all will eventually pay off, if you just keep on blogging.

It was nice to hear your opinions about what photography related blog can do for you (and what it can't), even though the message in your video (more or less) puts me back to drawing board to really figure out what I want to accomplish with my blogs and what I should do to achieve it.

I was at this session in Dubai - and on Chase's 3-day course there - and can testify it is a wonderful learning experience.

From hands on learning with top photographers to mixing with a great bunch of people, it's a wonderful experience.

If you have the means to get there next year then GO! You won't be disappointed.

How come it's always strange to hear your own voice on a recording?! I never think it sounds like me...I sound like more of a dork in real life than I do in my head!

But thanks for the feedback on my question, I've been blogging steadily since as you know and I'm slowly getting more readers visiting each month.

I'll also echo Julian's comment, the whole trip was absolutely invaluable. If I wasn't learning in the classroom I was learning from just hanging out with you guys. I can't wait for next year!

Lots of great ideas shared here. I've been following what you guys do for a while now as your videos always get me excited to go out and shoot.

A small group of us photographer/video types just started a blog this past week, and it's videos like this that make a guy feel like maybe there's still a chance to be found on the web.

thanks man.

Oh and don't worry, I won't tell anybody about the preloaded JamPack audio samples used to make the intro song ;)

I couldn't agree more with this. I personally think some of the more famous and recognized photographers today are the ones posting regular content.

New photographers must be at an all time high and we are all looking for a handful of sites to learn from daily.

Teaching/Blogging/Workshops is huge right now and if your teaching in public, future clients will also identify you as an expert in the subject.

Thanks Chase. I listened to most of this, and am inspired to be more focused in my blogging. I run more blogs than I can remember at 2 in the morning, everything from singlespeed mt. biking to photo of the day. I am contemplating a blog novel, with photography. Also a basic photography skills tutorial. Do I have time? No. I really love blogs and blogging. What hooked me was a blog by a girl in Bagdad about 6 or 7 years ago, she was the Iraqi Anne Frank, blogging her day to day about no-power, bombs, relative abductions and being bored to death with the absence of school. It was the first thing I read in the morning for about 6 months, then it disappeared. Gone. I know that people I wouldn't expect to follow my blogs, do follow my blogs, I hope more people than I can imagine followed this Iraqi girl's blog.

I started blogging about this time last year after finding both yours and David Hobby's blogs. It's nice to know that I'm on your wavelength in terms of why I'm blogging and who I'm blogging for.

I don't get much traffic (hell I get excited when I receive an email telling me I've had a comment left!), but as you mentioned, it's about looking inward rather than using it as a promotional tool.

PS. Have you seen the iPhone apps for blogging? I tried out Lifecast and works pretty well with blogger. Now you can blog from anywhere! haha

What I have is more of a question than a comment. In posting your work on the web isn't there a big risk in people stealing and using your work? I in the past have had people steal my work and I never was able to get compensation for their illegal usage of my work. So I removed my work from the web, Which in turn served no one. Ending a once promising career all together.

What steps are there for a person to use in protecting images published on the web? Copyright protection is costly to the semi-pro field of photographers out there. Or does one simply take their chances in publishing on the web?

@Anon - Regarding Digital Copyright Protection.

There is really no alternative to the internet as a tool to share your work. Any aspiring photographer will almost absolutely need to post images online in order to build the recognition required for a successful business. There are many things you can do to limit your risk online.

Register your images with the US Copyright Office or similar federal agency. In the states, this is THE tool for building a case against infringements. It is also wise to be very careful about where you publish your images online. Flickr, Myspace, Facebook, Smugmug, etc. all have stipulations in their usage agreements that effect the ownership of your images. Read the small print, and make educated decisions regarding where you post. Watermarks, flash galleries, and copyright notices are all ways to protect your images online.

Keep good records, register your images with the copyright office, know the rules where you post, make ownership apparent in your online presence, and always stay vigilant in protecting your images.

Good Luck!

Hi Chase,

Could you please tell us a bit more about LiveBooks and the development process of your website? Why such a talented guy, assisted by a highly qualified team, chose not to design and develop his website by himself? Also, is your blog manageable through a 3rd party web interface or do you need to have access to all your blog files to post?
Thanks
