And My iPhone Goes to... (BTW, Check Out This Gallery)

6/24/2009 09:03:00 PM

Omar Shine, for this killer image here. Great composition, color, and story. Points for abstraction. Congrats Omar. Everyone please shower him with praise. Omar is from the great country of Canada, so it'll be up north that I'm mailing my phone. (Omar, please contact me offline about getting it to you.)

IMPORTANT: in addition to Omar's winning shot, there were 3500 images submitted in just a couple of days, with some absolutely stunning work therein. Seriously. As such, I have posted a gallery of my favorite one hundred images with photographer names on each. This gallery is REMARKABLE. Please pay a visit. A good chunk of this work stands up to a lot of the work I see in the industry, regardless of the the platform, mobile or otherwise. Pat yourselves on the back. And thanks for the fun.

--

[And btw, a personal aside: I found out my mom and dad entered some spoof images in the contest too. Scroll back thru the whole Facebook gallery of submissions if you want to see images of a strange goat tied to a car and a cactus shaped like a rabbit. my parents are funny and cooler'n hell...]
[Lastly, in case you missed it, this entry is the result of this earlier post.]

Well done, Omar. I noticed several of your images and commented on some early on. You had a couple that could have been winners.

Chase, good choice. I was thinking about the challenge you were going to have digging through all that and picking one image. Also, nice touch putting that gallery of 100 together. I think those 100 folks probably feel pretty good about it as well and they deserved some notice.

Good job to all of you as well.

Thanks for doing this, I really enjoyed it.

Well, if the photography thing doesn't work out, I see a promising career as a photo editor for you.

Seriously, from 3500 submissions, you culled out some stunning images. And there seems to be a consistency of tone in each of them that contributes to the gallery as a whole.

I'm thinking we hit up MOMA or The Tate for the group show. You?

Thanks for giving us all the opportunity, and for choosing (two~!) of my shots for your top 100.

Appreciate it.

Great image - excellent stuff in the gallery.

It's interesting to see the kind of photo's there are most of here. Mostly it's streety and/or abstracts, where color rendition and timing isn't of the out most essence.

I submitted one of those myself (but didn't make it in top100). For the simple reason that my i780 takes nearly two seconds from I press the shutter till it actually takes the photo, and the shutter speed seems to around two seconds as well, unless we have direct sunlight. Oh, and if there's too harsh lights, something, will be blown.

But for something that I carry with me always, I should have taken the time to learn its limits earlier.

Anyway, just wanted to thank you for this interesting challenge.

The iPhone is the digital equivalent of the Diana or Holga in that it frees the photographer's mind from technical thinking and allows the creative mind to rise unrestricted to the surface. Wonderful work by all!

So does anyone else think that just because the contest is over it means we should stop sharing images?

I sort of liked paging through the images and finding inspiration.

Who else wants to keep posting images to the Facebook page?

Sorry for not joining the lovefest, but the winning pick isn't even close to the best one in that gallery. I guess that's what makes art art. Cool shots, there. All of them.

How about we make a Flickr page, only for cellphone images?
That would work way better than submitting the images to the Chase's fanpage.

Also, congrats to Omar!

Hey guys, sorry it took so long to jump on here, its been a crazy week with mid terms (sigh)...

I woke up at 6am that day to do a last minute cram for a mid term I had in 3 hours... I Went to my Apple branded slab of plastic and shook the mouse to see that my web browser was full screen with CJ's blog still up. My index finger cringed as it was having flashbacks of the last 12 hours - clicking the refresh button, and slamming the +R keys until they longer responded. (I’m sure that Dartanyon noticed an influx in hits from my IP, and thought “what the hell?”)

…So I figure, one last judo-chop shouldn’t hurt, so I did…. The screen refreshed, and at first I though I was still dreaming or something as I saw the pic I took glaring back at me.

I kept saying to myself that this can’t be right because there were a lot of amazing pics submitted, over 3500 to be exact.

My virtual beer/high five goes to Kevin Wyllie for the amazing shot of the Electronica concert….. Wicked bro, that shot gives me chills!

Anyways, thanks everyone for the kind words and shouts to Chase Jarvis for putting together a sik competition… Honestly, Chase doesn’t have to do anything more than take amazing photographs to support the photography community – and yet he continues to go beyond that and provide all of us here with his wealth of knowledge; from high speed flash photography and composite structure, to details on concept-2-completion.

I just gave Kevin my last virtual beer, but to Chase I think a virtual Planet will do just fine…haha

Peace!
