Chase Jarvis CURRENT: The Consequences of Creativity

I was recently invited to speak to the Art Director's Club of Denver and the ASMP about creativity, and subsequently delivered that keynote two weeks ago. This video is a recording of that talk. Hope it strikes a chord with you.

I had a blast connecting with some of the creative community in Denver/Boulder while I was in town, and it was also a great honor to judge your annual advertising awards show with some rather distinguished ad gurus from around the country. Thanks to the ADCD for being such gracious hosts.

Additionally, the video should be downloadable via my iTunes podcast within the next 24-48 hours.

I'm in a spot of redefining myself...this is inspiring. I was a designer by default, then photographer by choice, (not well paid), now photography teacher. Funny how fate deals. I've found that I love working with teenagers, and now have a summer to do anything I want. I love photography and have always been a creative at heart. Sweet. Seriously good stuff here...keep on rockin' the free world.

I did a very similar project in the city of Savannah, GA - where I attend school. I only had a month to do the project, so I couldn't meet as many people as you did, but I still had a great time doing it. My project also focused on the stories that these people had to share. I'm just getting back into photography as a hobby after 20 years and your videos have really motivated me. My first DSLR arrived today and I'm so excited to start re-learning how to shoot. Digital is a whole new world but I'm really looking forward to learning.

I love your videos and they really do inspire me. I get all pumped up watching them. They make me want to pick up a camera and start shooting.

Oh yeah, you mentioned in the video the large bandwidth bill on the D90 video - I'm probably partially to blame. I must have watched it 100 times. For whatever reason, that video is what got me wanting to start shooting again.

DaveMPhoto said...: Chase, great presentation. It's interesting what you had to say because I was starting down a similar path. I was an AD for a local station and I kept trying to be innovative, creative and push our creative in a more positive and collaborative way. I got a lot of resistance. I guess they preferred a more "Can i take your order and would you like fries with that order" kind of approach.

I was frustrated and turned to photography as my creative outlet even doing some assignments for free just to gain some experience. At the end of last year, I was informed my contract would not be renewed and have found myself like many others unemployed. However the attitude to do more and be creative was noticed by others and has provided me with some paid work including photography and web design. Areas that I had no experience in until this year.

I was lucky in that I was able to put money away, so that now I have some freedom to devote more time to photography and yes, sometimes do work for free. I don't give my work for free, but rather find individuals that may be in a similar situation that may need a headshot or a model just starting to get into the business and needs some help. It may turn into something and then again it may not. I've also started a photography blog, inspired by yourself and folks like David Hobby, Zack Arias & Joe McNally.

Pretty soon, I will have to take a job in retail or something for sustenance. Although I have no steady job or income, I have never felt the kind of freedom that I'm enjoying right now. I've never been happier.

Your talk not only inspired me but confirmed what I'd already been feeling. Photography and the creative instinct inside me, helps keep me positive during these tough times. Thanks for your words and inspiration.

Brian said...: The message here is fantastic, and absolutely inspiring. The catch is that all of the more introverted photographers (myself included) can never hope to make this work for them. You need a confidence and ambition some of us simply don't have. Being creative =/= Being confident. This system requires that though.

I'm also finding out that my 9yr old daughter is teaching me lessons about creative shooting (when I trust her with my "L" glass!).

The job as a developer is very strikt and solution based, and then i have photography as a Creative outlet. at the moment iam happy with the seperation of technical work and creative sparetime.

i kinda lost track of what i was saying.

I literally have tons of them just lying around and I am currently doing nothing about them (even though I had won awards for them). It's now time to put them out there. I stopped spending so much time on poetry a few years ago when I realized I could not make money off it and it was taking so much of my time. Now I realized a part of me was dead for a few years. Jeffrey Lui said...: Your talk is very inspiring to a lot of photographers out there. And it reminded of a project I just recently concluded.

My batchmates and I embarked on a photographic journey to take beautiful pictures of me and my batchmates, wherever we were, and this meant going around 2 countries in 6 different cities/provinces.

It tooks us 6 months to shoot and 3 months of post-processing (we were busy with our dayjobs) the images building the three collages and getting everyone's approval, editing and re-editing the video, implementing new ideas, and having fun all the way.

Thanks for coming here to give an inspiring talk. I wanted to share a little success story that I attribute to your encouragement and Howard Schatz's reminder to shoot to "delight and amuse" yourself and his reminder that "work brings work."
I recently undertook a project photographing classic cars for the rather base reason that I like how they look and thought it would be fun. I'm working on getting the stuff out there and I'm thrilled that the work that I'm doing for me, for fun, just landed me an exciting gig! thanks for the motivation!
I found one of the 20 or so people I need to impress. here's to the other 19!
