The Best Camera Thanks You. Big Big Bigtime.

9/25/2009 11:10:00 AM

I slept 4 hours in a 65 hour stretch.

...that was in the couple days before and after launching The Best Camera ecosystem. But I loved it, because working hard to create stuff feels good. It’s not everyday that you get an opportunity to launch a book, or an iPhone app, or an online community, let alone all three. The experience has been exciting, humbling, scary and energizing all at once, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to you.

Thanks in large part to this community, in the first 24 hours after launch:
_Best Camera app debuted at #12 of all paid apps in the app store.
_The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You book, debuted at #172 of all titles on Amazon
_ www.thebestcamera.com saw 200,000 sets of eyes.

...And since that first 24 hours, it’s been getting better by the hour. Wow. I am humbled. And I Thank you thank you thank you.

Launch is fun, but it’s where we want to go with this thing now that’s important in the big picture.

Overall, I want to continue to celebrate pictures. I want to continue to grow thebestcamera.com and the visualizer in the app, into a seriously remarkable place for viewing pictures. I am blown away by what I see there everyday as you’ve been choosing www.thebestcamera.com in the sharing menu. There are currently hundreds of pictures being added there every hour. If you haven’t stared at that thing, and if you haven’t been voting from your phone (ie giving the thumb’s up) to images you like, the community has been missing your input. Give it a shot...[click the 'continue reading' link below]

For those of you who were rightly concerned about the Facebook captioning issue, apologies abound. It was an unintended hiccup that inserted a placeholder caption ‘uploaded with Chase Jarvis’ Best Camera’. We missed removing it during testing. You should know that we fixed it within 24 hours of launch and subsequently re-submitted the refreshed code to the app store for approval. Simple work arounds are listed in the FAQ’s.

For those who want to upload to Flickr: every Flickr account has an email addy for uploading. Send to that address from the share menu in the app. More elegant solutions soon ;)

Of course there are a million ways for us to improve what we’ve created, many of which we’re already aware. If you’ve got ideas or suggestions, I want them. I am listening. That said, please don’t put them in the comments below. We’re collecting your ideas via the submission form on the support page.

While we’re gathering feedback, I don’t want to look too far into the future or into the past. After all this ecosystem is still only 2.5 days old. What I’m really hoping for is that we focus on using this shiny new toy. Just like your mobile phone camera has one button and you can have lots of fun and discover what’s possible with that one button, I’d love for you to crank on our version 1.0 of Best Camera and see what you can make it do for you. Have fun with it.

For those in this community who have written me asking how you might help this app further succeed, the answer is pretty simple: 1. tell your friends online and in the real world; and 2. rank the app and write a (hopefully glowing ;) review in the iTunes app store. That’s in large part how other people in the world discover and buy apps.

And the same goes for the book....the initial rounds of The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You are beginning to arrive on your doorstep from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. For those of you who sent email and asked to further help out...just like the app, please tell your friends and rate/review on Amazon, B&N, Borders. Thank you thank you.

Lastly, wanted to remind you that on Monday, September 28, I’m choosing my favorite picture that’s been uploaded to www.thebestcamera.com and giving its creator a brand new, unlocked (yes unlocked) iPhone 3Gs loaded with the Best Camera app. I’ll ship it anywhere in the world. Hope to see your photos there this weekend.

Remarkable release Chase. You are inspirational on multiple mediums!

One question: Is there a way to upload photos to bestcam if you *don't* have an iPhone?? It sure would be nice to win one.

I am interested in uploading a pic from my phone as well, but I don't have an iPhone either. I guess to win an iPhone you need an iPhone?

11:36 AM
Blogger Andy said...

Speaking of uploading, have you or Übermind considered looking into the iPhone External Accessory Framework? I'd kill for an app that would allow for a direct tether from a dSLR to the iPhone.

I would buy the app if it didn't tag all the images with your name. If I am paying, why the tag? Photoshop doesn't label my images "from Adobe Creative Suite CS4"..

Why don't give away a camera instead of an item folks using your app already have.

And to Andy, that app already exists called dSLR by onOne Software

It would be cool to have a search feature on the web site to be able to look for certain types of photos... I guess you guys have probably already thought of that.

Thanks for the cool app!

@ hedrives: the post on which you're commenting here is supposed to make clear that the problem you're talking about is a captioning bug. we discovered this and submitted new code to apple within 24 hours of launch, now just waiting for approval from the app store. sorry for the inconvenience - was 100% unintended.

Any way for non-iPhone users to win the iPhone? Ostensibly, everyone who has posted a photo at thebestcamera.com already owns an iPhone. I'd sure like one :)

I love this app. I love it so much I started a group in flickr and I challenged everyone to take pictures using the app and post a ton this weekend. I love it so much I can barely get any work done because I'm showing all my coworkers and friends.

Thank you for making it so easy to "Shoot, Edit, and Share". It's my favorite saying too.

Thanks Chase, like your work and your missions!

This has been a fantastic App. Like I said on my blog, the ability to send or upload the picture from inside the application seals the deal. It's a no brainer.

I think this is a wonderful thing Chase has done. He has been a great inspiration to myself and photographers across the world and he seizes to amaze on every blog post. A Black Berry user myself, I find this to be wonderful for photographers like myself on the go to keep the creative juices flowing. Keep up the great work.

I'm glad you're fixing the captioning issue. I was startled by it m'self.
I was thinking about the iPhone issue too. I've got the white 32gig 3Gs and, while it would be nice to be able to match a black one to my attire, it would be cool to win a Nikon something or other. But, hey, I'm a Nikon junkie. You could just give away the phone and then whoever gets it can sell it and use the money for whatever they want. That sounds fair. :P
OH! I just had a neat idea while I was typing this, how about another giveaway where you give away one of those iPhone cases with the lens kits? Just a thought. Can you tell I process things externally.

Love the app though!
I'm waiting for an app that has manual ISO and other manual settings but I don't think they've released the iPhone API to do that yet so I guess I keep on wishing and waiting.

Chase,

please consider making the background of "The Best Photos" website just a little bit darker. Otherwise the photos with the white frame can't be appreciated enough.

Other than that, the application is awesome! How does it sell in the European Union?

Thanks Chase for rolling out this community, as when I saw you talk in Denver earlier this summer it was the start of my experimenting with creativity with the iPhone and have seen that grown the past few months. It is just using the tools you have and watching your work grow whether if it is an iPhone, other mobile device, point and shoot or DSLR.

I noticed many people saying what would I do if I win an iPhone if I already have one? Well if you don't have a 3GS then keep it and give yours to someone else similar to what Chase did when he upgraded. One of the goals of The Best Camera is to show people that it is not about the equipment and that it is the creativity within you which creates these pieces of work.

@JD I've seen that app. dSLR, while nice, isn't what I mean. I specifically want a *direct* connection to the iPhone. dSLR uses a computer as intermediary - you have to tether your camera to the computer, and the app talks to the computer, not the camera.

The iPhone External Accessory Framework allows developers to write apps that talk directly to hardware via the 30-pin/usb connector and/or via bluetooth. Being able to have Best Camera work seamlessly with a dSLR when it's available, as well as on its own when it's not, would be incredible.

@ charles: if you're using words like "highlights" then you're probably a more advanced user (ie my mom doesn't care about blocked darks or blown highlights...). that said, the signature filter work amazing if you start with a reasonable balanced initial image. if you have an image that is at the high end of the histo, and if you're really trying to stay within the histogram, consider adding a couple of dark filters first. that'll put you where you wanna be

Hi folks. Maybe I'm reading things wrong, but I'm a bit bummed with some of the conversations I see flying around Twitter and the like right now. Like thousands of others, for days now I've been absolutely thrilled with the fantastic app that Chase and Team have developed..it's awesome…as is the concept of "the best camera is the one that's with you." But here's the bummer part...suddenly some people are spouting off about "gamers" and the like, that try to pass off DSLR photos as iPhone photos. Wait a second here...am I missing something? This entire concept is wrapped around the answer to the eternal question of what's the best camera, and Chase nailed it: "it's the one with you." Maybe I'm mistaken, but I take that to mean everything from a D3x to a seven year old, 1.2 megapixel cameraphone…and everything in between. Yes, the "app" was designed for the iPhone, but to limit the"best camera" site/concept to iPhone photos only, is a bit ironic, no? If that was the case, the site might be called, "theiphoneisthenbestcamera.com." For those folks out there hell-bent on "catching" the gamers and posers, relax for a moment and realize not everyone is trying to "win" something...some are just enjoying applying a fantastic tool (the app) to their pictures...period. Some of us don't have an iPhone...we might even "borrow" someone else's. My wife is the lucky one in our family with the iPhone, yet I'm the one with the photography bug. So I take pics with my 40D, with my CrapBerry, and sometimes with her iPhone. But we also use her iPhone as a wonderfully portable photo album/hard drive; not only for the pictures taken with said phone, but for those we upload from the other sources listed above (as I'm sure many iPod Touch owners do, too). Up until this point, I've used CameraBag and some other great apps on her phone to tweak my pictures...regardless of their camera "origin." And now that we've purchased the best camera app yet (pun intended), I'm having more fun than ever playing with my pics while on-the-go. I see the app as a mini, portable Aperture/Lightroom, and I love it...absolutely love it! I'm having a great time applying some great effects to my pictures and uploading them to the (perfectly named) "best camera" site. Not for a moment am I trying to "slip something by" anyone...I'm just digging, and living by, the very TBCITOTWY concept.

Thanks Chase and Team, for the concept, the app, the support and the advice you provide the photography world in general….it's truly appreciated.

I have read in the iTunes reviews that the app adds a watermark in the pictures that says Chase Jarvis Photography... is this true? if so I will buy it once that watermark fature is removed or to let me customized with my own watermark. If this is can be set up in the setting just let m know otherwise people is killing you at the iTunes reviews of your app.

In the other hand.. where can we see the final pictures you took for the Sandisk new Campaing?

Kepp up the great and inspiring work

are there any plans for a android verison?

1:31 AM
Blogger Chase Jarvis said...

@ claudio: ahh no. there is no "watermark" added, and there is no "chasejarvis photography added". all that is mis information. There IS a bug that adds dummy text 'uploaded from Chase Jarvis' Best Camera' that can potentially appear in a Facebook captionj. This is well documented on the FAQ section of www.thebestcamera.com. There are a couple options for very simple work arounds. Within 24 hours of launch we submitted updated code to apple for approval, we expect that approval soon.

In the meantime, I'm hoping for the members of this community to support us by spreading the correct information and by using and enjoying the app.

More Sandisk stuff coming this week too.

Thanks!
