Come Watch: LIVE shoot with Sarah McLachlan TODAY

sarah mclachlan laws of illusionUPDATE: If you missed our Sarah McLachlan video shoot/performance there’s a re-broadcast of the internet feed here on YouTube. Check it!

First we kicked off chasejarvisLIVE, then creativeLIVE… so you figured out I really dig this LIVE thing. Well, today, I’m excited to share that I’ve also been working hard with a little coffee company down the street called Starbucks to help bring you StarbucksLIVE. To kick this off, I’m TODAY at 12 noon PDT (3pm NYC time) doing a LIVE photo/video shoot with multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning musician, Sarah McLachlan. Sarah will be performing live from a little nook inside the Starbucks headquarters here in Seattle, and we’ll have a few cameras and a few mics pointed at her.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE: In our typical style, the setting should be pretty relaxed. We’ve set up a baby grand piano, some basic lights and cameras and we’re going to make some great video images while Sarah plays from her new album, Laws of Illusion. Besides Sarah’s beautiful performance, the other thing you’ll see is me and my crew actually working. How bout that. This is the real deal. If you tune in a little early you’ll get to see us …putting the finishing touches on our gear and set up for a couple hours prior to Sarah’s live performance. I won’t be rapping with the camera much, as I’ll have my hands full, but I think the show should be a fun one.

Use the comment section below to ask any questions you’d like answered about what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, gear, anything, you name it, I’ll try to answer it. And btw, Starbucks just announced this to their 8.1 million Facebook fans–and this ain’t broadcast TV, it’s the internet, so get there early if you can. You can ask questions of Sarah and make requests on the Starbucks Twitter handle using hashtag #starbuckslive.

Here’s the main url: http://www.starbucks.com/live
If you want to tune in via iPhone 4 or 3Gs or iPad use: www.ustream.tv/channel/starbucks-live

Thanks for the behind the scenes live video. That guy sitting at the piano about an hour before w/ his arms cross is hilarious…

Fun video to watch, but I think a lot of us were a little confused about what we’d be seeing — expecting more “behind-the-scenes” and setup information. I know you mentioned you wouldn’t have a lot of “face-time” with the cameras yourself, but it would have been nice to have given some setup information, walked around the space to discuss what was going to be shot, etc.? It wasn’t clear from the live video — were you running a video camera yourself and/or did you shoot any stills during the performance? Was there a formal photoshoot with Sarah afterward?

Also, I’ll echo (har har) the comments on audio — definitely had some issues there — and we all completely missed out on the “pre-shoot” discussion between youself and Sarah! I’m not sure if that was muted intentionally or not, but that segment alone would most likely have been the most interesting to all of us!

Chase, you (and your team), are non-stop! CreativeLive is a great concept, and fun to see in action, but is even cooler now that you’re spinning it out into something that local coffee company of ours picks up. Nice work on the partnership.

Chase, thanks for sharing this. I really enjoyed it…yeah, tears and a runny nose. Sarah is incredible.

There were some sound issues, and my connection speed was also a problem…need to find a T1 to hook into…I think.

Overall, the broadcast was fabulous, given the fact that she was not at
100% herself. She played and sang from her heart…a true artist.

    Nice video.

Too bad the audio was really bad. Levels not properly set, left channel dropping out for the greater part of time. Sounded like someone didn’t push the plug on the mic all the way in. Shouldn’t the sound have been checked during the set-up instead of waiting until the last min.

  12. maski June 26, 2010 at 1:43 am #

i missed it.. :( ….announce it at least a day before, pls….. just for the CET zone folk like me……

    Hey there!

Sorry to bug you again. You guys are always so good at answering questions, and I seriously appreciate that. I just had one last one. I love your guys’ video work, and especially what you can do with the Nikon D3s. I also have a D3s, and LOVE it. It’s unreal. For an external Mic I use an Azden SGM 2x shotgun mic. I really like it, other than the fact that I have white noise, like that background just quiet buzz, as if you were to record nothing on an old tape recorder and then play it back. So when I’m doing an interview, the people sound great, but there is that buzz that sounds extremely unprofessional. How do you get that crisp sound so literally all you here is the person being interviewed (granted you’re filming in a quiet surrounding)? I can only think of it being one of two things. 1>The Microphone? I know you had recommended the Rode Stereo VideoMic. If I use that would it cut out the noise? Or 2…the XLR cable that runs from my Mic to I believe the 1/8 port in my camera? I just bought a short one off B&H so I didn’t have all this extra cord. Could that be the problem? In other words, what do YOU GUYS do to cut out that noise? Anyways, sorry for the long comment. Just could really use this help. You guys rock. Thanks so much for your great tutorials.

    Nate

Hey Chase…Great Post, I love the Creativity of the 100% Live Web Broadcast. I can definitely appreciate the technical craziness that was required to pull that off. Here were a couple of things I know you probably wished were possible…

More control over the lighting (main lights on which made it less environmentally beautiful.)

More use of the DOF that is available to you on the D3′s to blur the distracting backgrounds (like the light right by her head) which can also result in a more interesting bokeh background.

With the tight studio I can only imagine how hard it was to keep the other camera ops out of frame when live cutting but that would help keep your focal point on Sarah and not on the camera op trying to get the next shot.

Overall, it is great to do that live and to not have had the experience (I am assuming here) of shooting and producing Live Production so great work and I really enjoy following your career!

    Keep it up!
