How to Shoot a Fancy Stop-Motion Commercial on the Cheap (-ish)

Have you seen the recent viral ad from Levi’s of a guy walking across America wearing Levi jeans? Pretty simple, but pretty cool. [Maybe the walking thing was inspired by this similar concept in Toronto?]

Anyway, this video here shows us how they pulled it off using just one camera, a tripod, 14 days, a few thousand photos, a few thousand miles, a protractor, a string, and a bit of math. Sign me up.

Their final piece is after the jump – well worth the watch. Click ‘continue reading’ below Continue Reading →

Making Of The Speedo Underwater Ad Campaign

Thought you’d get a kick out of this video that takes the latest Speedo advertising campaign from ideation to creation. I wish it went a whole bunch deeper (pun), but it’s certainly enough to get my attention. Hope you dig. The underwater studio at Pinewood (0:42) is really dope. (I’m jealous…wish I’d have hired that pool for this work I did a while back…)

Also–since the vid doesn’t give any real love to the photographer–It’s my pleasure to do so… It’s been great to discover photographer Martin Brent from this. Check out his work when you get a second – some stellar stuff. Still shot from the campaign after the jump. Continue Reading →

Which Photos Should I Donate?

chase jarvis bdayIndeed, today is my birthday! I’m celebrating with family and friends up at our cabin on the coast (snapshot here of yours truly at our fire on the beach last night), but there is something else that’s on my mind today. Giving back. And I’ve decided that in this coming year of my life, one of my goals is to give more time, money, and effort toward philanthropy and charity.

This will take many manifestations this year, but here’s one quick thing I’d like your help in tackling today. I get tapped every year to donate prints for numerous charity auctions, and I always struggle with which ones to give. A couple such asks are on my hot plate right now, and I’m stuck, so my ask of you today is very simple:

Out of all the images in my online portfolios here, would you please click around and tell me which image(s) is/are your favorite? Please specify by gallery name and image number.

I’m not looking for praise or critique, I’d just love to know which image(s) you like from any on this site so that we can collate all the feedback and use this community’s thoughts to help determine which prints I donate to raise money this year.

Thanks in advance. Your time here is the best birthday gift I could think of receiving.

creativeLIVE Presents David DuChemin AND Jasmine Star

david duchemin and jasmine star for creativelive
Guess who’s on deck for the next 2 series of creativeLIVE weekend workshops? Two stellar folks:

David DuChemin – Vision Driven Photography
David’s recent series of books (Within the Frame and Vision Mongers) have carved a niche in photographic education that–prior to now–rarely got discussed. That niche is VISION. The internet has given photographers so many tools to work with gear and specs and digits and all that crap, but there’s been a distinct absence in rhetoric in and around VISION. Better than anyone going, DuChemin, teaches us to cultivate our own. Shoot your own stuff, compare it with the live class during this 3 day workshop. It’s not to be missed.

Jasmine Star – Wedding Photography Re-invented
Perhaps no one before has stormed the wedding photography industry like Jasmine Star. In just 4 years Jasmine has become a winner of the “Top 10 Wedding Photographers Worldwide” by American Photo Magazine and has developed a reputation as the leading wedding photo instructor. We at creativeLIVE are bringing her to you…get this… to shoot a LIVE wedding AND teach before, during and after – everything you wanna know – over the course of 4 days in August. Among other things, we’re currently seeking a real bride & groom to participate (video to participate in this after the jump!!). If you have ever had even a remote interest in the artistry, freedom, and great money for shooting weddings, this course is for you.

Clients From Hell [Friday Photo Humor]

clients from hell via chase jarvisClient: “How come all the photos I took have the heads cut off?”

You: “Hmm, Did you look though the view finder when you took them?”

Client: “I don’t know what that is. Can’t you just move the picture up so I can see their heads? I mean they’re digital pictures?”

Clients come in all shapes, sizes and levels of experience in every line of work. Embedded this here due to its relevance. If you have clients at all–or might be one yourself–check out Clients From Hell for an occasional laugh. This one sent to me but a bunch of peeps (including Taylor at Hipsters With Kids). Have other laughs? Share them below or at CFH. Have a great weekend. Take lots of pictures.

Evaluating Photographer Promotions with Heather Morton Art Buyer

How to promote your work and get noticed as a photographer is one of the more popular questions I get asked on an almost daily basis. I’ll certainly be chiming in on this topic over the next few weeks as we explore this topic more in depth, but in the mean time, I thought I’d curate a few other opinions and asking some of my industry friends to chime in… That should help round out what you can find here.

To that end, this video above is from Heather Morton – Art Buyer. Great stuff from her blog. The question she’s answering here comes from Ryan Rogers. More info beyond the video, including some additional questions and images over at Ryan over at HMAb.

How bout you?
Don’t be shy.
What are you doing to promote your work?
Who would you like to give you feedback on that promo?

Off Topic. Unless You Like Video, Film, Music and Pop Culture…

Happy 4th of July weekend to USA readers. And to everyone, here’s an “off topic” post, unless of course you like photo, film, music, or pop culture, and then this is right on topic.

Following a wave of requests, this is a re-broadcast of a recent popular chasejarvisLIVE where I played host to two amazing and culturally relevant figures: emcee RA Scion and writer, filmmaker, and critic Charles Mudede. This video is a round table discussion that includes film, photo, and video-specific information, but since all the world (and our creative inspiration) transcends, or at least is informed by- pop culture, this piece and other forthcoming pieces like it has a far wider goal of sharing the sphere of things that inspire me, things I think you might find interesting or inspirational as well.

The round table discussion is followed by a live performance from RA Scion (Common Market, Victor Shade) doing some recent stuff off VICTOR SHADE at about the 1:48 mark.

A Confidential Prospectus for a New Magazine

life magazine prospectusI received an inspiring gift from a friend the other day that I thought I’d share with you here. Chew on it over the weekend. Hopefully this resonates with the creative part in you as it did with me. I made me want to make stuff even more and share it with the world. It is a confidential prospectus for a new magazine:

THE PURPOSE: To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things – machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon; to see our work – our paintings, towers and discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to: the women that men love and many children; to see and to take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed; Thus to see, and to be shown, is now the will and new expectancy of half of humankind. To see, and to show, is the mission now undertaken by a new kind of publication, THE SHOW-BOOK OF THE WORLD, hereinafter described…

This new magazine? LIFE. This is the opening paragraph from Henry R. Luce’s 1936 original, confidential prospectus for what became LIFE Magazine. I couldn’t help but be wildly inspired by the concept. It’s a passionately written piece on the power and potential of photography, as well as a wonderful slice of history.

We all know the plight of magazines, but this gave me hope for their new era, whatever it might look like. Just think about how much more wildly capable we are today to actually deliver on this purpose and this promise. We have the internet. We have devices, screens and even still papers in places where there are no screens or fiber channel chords-to share now more than ever before. More than ever before we have our cameras with us day everyday and the means to digitally pipe this information around the world in a millisecond. The rest of this prospectus is worth a read. Link for download is after the jump. Continue Reading →
