Thanksgiving Giving Of Thanks

For USA readers, yesterday was Thanksgiving – I spent the day with family, being thankful for so much. For the international readers, I hope you joined in yesterday, or perhaps will join me in some thankfulness today.

Front and center on my list of things to be thankful for are: health, family, and community. Health makes the whole thing possible; family–immediate and extended–gives me the daily dose of what love really means, as well as the strength to live a full life; and community–my friends, my amazing staff, co-collaborators, and you–make it all so exciting, rich, and inspirational beyond my wildest dreams. All these things are wonderful and worthwhile things to celebrate.

Within the always-humbling, sometimes-overwhelming presence that this community has in my life, I draw an immeasurable amount of inspiration and motivation. It’s continually shocking for those times when I receive your thanks or kind words, because in my head, our roles are reversed – I feel like the one who clearly derives the most benefit from your participation in this constantly growing community. Words here cannot extend a big enough thanks to you.

Let me take a moment to thank a small handful of friends, collaborators, organizations that have for some reason or another recently Continue Reading →

Bizarre News: Kuwait Bans DSLR Cameras

engadget no dslrThe Kuwait Times, Gizmodo and Engadget have reported that the government of Kuwait has outlawed DSLR cameras.

“The Ministries of Information, Social Affairs and Finance (hello, 1984!) have collectively decided to ban the use of the chunky shooters in public places, except where it can be shown that it’s for journalistic purposes.” – Engadget.

—UPDATE—-
The Kuwait Times Newspaper has rescinded this story. Go figure.
___________

This ban reportedly affects tourists too, so if you’re headed to Kuwait for some relaxing time over the holidays, come prepared. I understand that compacts and camera phones have not been banned, so you can still get the shot…-ish.

I’ve read all I can on the topic this morning, but for the life of me I’m having trouble understanding. Why they hatin’ on the interchangable lenses? What about micro 4/3? Can anybody out there shed some light on this bizarre state of affairs for me?

Fraction Magazine: 100% of Print Sale Goes To Artist

Photo by Todd Walker via Fraction Magazine

Fraction Magazine today launched their annual Holiday Print Sale where, for between $30 and $100 bucks, you can purchase some pretty stunning original photographic art work. I got a DM from them this morning about the sale, went over and took a peek, and was positively struck by a lot of the work.

The hook? The hook is that there is no hook. 100% of the money goes direct to the artist. Just good clean livin there. The karma gods are smiling.

I was thinking that the gift of original artwork is a lovely gift and something you might consider giving over the holidays. Hope you find something you like. I love the shot in the thumbnail above by Todd Walker, and the couple others after the jump by Isa Leshko and Tom Richardson. Be sure to visit Fraction to see lots more and support artists over the holidays.

Google “Goggles” Will Soon Find Your Photos

google gogglesIf you’re like me, you probably use your iphone/android/whatever phone camera as a visual journal. Certainly I shoot creative photos with it, but I’m also constantly generating snapshots of things I like, patterns, ideas, magazine covers, ads, and other stuff that act as inspiration or reminders for me to check out something in greater detail later when I’ve got more time.

Well, Google’s new-ish app “Google Goggles” capitalizes on this. Snap a photo, do a search with that photo as the input, and get results. I’m only just starting to play with it, but Google claims that in addition to text the app recognizes landmarks, books, wine, artwork, logos and more.

And, since I shoot a lot of advertising imagery, what really got my attention was when they recently announced advertising partnership “tests” with Disney, Buick, Delta, T-Mobile and Diageo. Use the app to snap a photo of certain enabled print adverts in a magazine, billboard, or whatever–hit “go”– and you’re suddenly immersed in a rich media experience with results galore to explore.

If this is the case, how soon will it be that all your images will be recognizable by visual search rather than simply the Google Goggle enabled campaigns, or the metadata attached to the image. Or even cooler, when your un-tagged images have been sniffed and are returned in search based on their pixel content. Will a search for “Toyota” soon return this image of mine, will a search for “diabetes” return this one, or perhaps even a search for “women’s underwear” might soon return even this one? I’m banking that it won’t be long.

I think my mind just exploded.

How Cameras Interact with Stuntmen

Happy Friday. I’m on the road today, but thought I’d squeeze in this video I found interesting. It illustrates–without all the CGI and Hollywood set, post production, and mojo coverup–some cool interplay between stunt men/women and a few RED cinema cameras on booms, jibs, cables and handheld. Basically, it’s a BTS stunt training video. You’ll need to slide into the vid a bit you see the actual cameras (the target of this vid is the stunt crowd for sure) but it’s worth it for us camera people/directors/dp’s. Beware for some laughable drama along the way, but dig the simplicity of the actions/camera moves in some cases, and the crazy level of detail in others. Enjoy and have a great weekend. Drop The Digital From Photography

I heard it again yesterday for the billionth time: “Digital Photography”. Isn’t it time we drop the word ‘digital’?

Seems we’ve managed to drop the “electric” from “electric guitar” in common parlance.

We found it easy to drop the word “acrylic” from “acrylic painting” when that came on the scene with oils.

We quickly ditched the “digital” from “digital music” when it took the lead over records and tapes and CDs.

I suppose by-and-large our industry has dropped the word, but given that digital and analog photography are fundamentally the same thing, isn’t it time we implore the rest of the world to assimilate the term “digital photography” back into “photography” as a whole?

Chase Jarvis Keynote Address on ‘Social Art’ from Photo Plus Expo NYC

In the past several days, I’ve received a ton of correspondence asking if I’d re-post my chasejarvisLIVE Keynote address from the PDN Photo Plus Expo in NYC last week. You asked for it, you got it.

At about the 25-or-so minute mark, I wrap up my monologue and invite a handful of guests on stage, all of whom I consider my friends who are living my message. I think you’ll be quite engaged. By my count it’s the first time all these folks have been together under one roof.

An impressive cast by any measure. Please give it a watch and share your thoughts. The topic is The New Creativity and the Social Art of Photography. In short, it’s about the new, crazy world of creating and sharing and how it has redefined an entire era.

Make A Lot of It

I’m certainly not a chef, but whenever I’m asked what the “key ingredient” is to making good photographs, good ART, the answer I give is a simple one: make a lot of it.

We often talk about how vision is everything, but vision doesn’t come from the womb full grown and mature. It’s cultivated. And that cultivation takes time and effort. Certainty and control might be your friends while performing surgery, but they are not your friends here.

While some people might mistake my suggestion of repetition and productivity with ‘thoughtless’ production, it couldn’t be further from what I mean. In reality, it’s usually through producing art that ideas get brought to fruition. You’re working your way through fear, through Continue Reading →
