Open Discussion: Why Go Retro?

Nikon D3s PolaroidHey all, Erik here with a quick guest post about a subject that’s raised a lively debate in our studio. Everyone on our crew has long been shooting with Polaroids, rangefinders, micro 4/3 cameras adapted to accept vintage lenses…even processing digital images to look like they came out of an old dusty camera. Surveying the landscape, it’s clear this tide has been rising for a while now and we’re not the only ones attached to this stuff. So the question I present to you is this:

Why is retro or faux-retro photography so popular these days?

Why, when we have such capable and inexpensive cameras at our disposal, are we reverting to old technology and old aesthetics? Is it pure nostalgia? Is it a palette cleanser from the ease and accuracy of said capable and inexpensive cameras?  Is it a passing trend? We have opinions–especially Chase does as you might expect–but we’d like to hear from you.

Polaroid GL10 Instant Mobile Printer Available in 10, 9, 8…

The Polaroid GL10 Mobile Instant Printer

You knew it was coming. A bazillion of you have been asking and now you are among the first to know: the Polaroid GL10 Mobile Instant Printer that was announced back at CES in January is now available for pre-order, but more importantly, it will hit some actual retail shelves first thing this morning in limited quantities.

The GL10 (I’ve been fondly calling it the Polaprinter) was designed to be the center of attention at any party, and as a mechanism to easily print the images we’re all making everyday on our mobile phones, point-and-shoots, etc. Until you’ve actually handed one of your friends a print from their 21 run, from a 2am escapade on the dance floor, from the birthday bash, or last night’s dinner party, you might not get it. But from that point on, you will. These days a little print is a rare treat. Now we’ve finally got some photos to put back on the fridge rather than leaving them locked up in a thumb drive or on Facebook.

So the GL10 is great for all that, but since I’ve been able to talk rather openly about it since January…[hit 'continue reading for more images & links] Continue Reading →

How To Blow Your Career In Photography

Here’s a sure-fire way to blow your career in photography:

1. Take lots of photos.
2. Get on twitter.
3. Start a blog.
4. Assist for another photographer.
5. Buy a better camera.
6. Create a “style” that’s all your own.
7. Hire an intern.
8. Get an agent.
9. Do behind-the-scenes videos.
10. Get a studio.
11. Franchise your business.
12. Live off your stock library.
13. Sell your prints.
14. Get some gear sponsors.
15. Teach workshops.
16. Do a book.

Now you’re confused.

Ok, so my point is NOT to avoid doing any of the things on the above list – there are lots of good things in there. My point is that old recipes die hard. And guarantees are few and far between.

By following some old-model plan for how to be a photographer, a filmmaker, a creative whatever, you’re surely doomed. Because there isn’t one anymore. If you’re not… Continue Reading →

See Who’s Hanging at #Dasein in NYC

Since we’re not tracking image by image whose work is hanging daily at the gallery in the Ace NYC (it’s on a near constant rotation of prints – hundreds per day), we’ll continue to publish vids like this and still images for you all to check out.

REMINDER: this gallery wall changes every day, sometimes 2x per day, with 100-200 new images going up in every update. Stay tuned for yours.

Still humbled beyond belief at the project we’re creating together. Keep the images coming (here). Feel free to @ me on Twitter when you upload, use hashtag #dasein. It keeps me energized and inspired to know that work is pouring in. Continue Reading →

Chase Jarvis 60: Reggie Watts [+photos and BTS]

Living at the Ace Hotel New York for 5 weeks has the benefit of getting to connect with the amazing cross section of people & culture.

Enter: Reggie Watts. I’ve got a ton of respect for Reggie. He’s a genius musician in a comedian’s skin, who moved from Seattle to NYC a short while ago as his career exploded. The LA Times called him, “Deliciously strange.” New York Magazine called him, “Spectacularly original.” And in GQ’s Man of the Year Issue, they called him a “Comic Genius.” He’s been on Conan’s show, even opened for him on all Conan’s last tour dates.

Reggie and I have a lot of mutual friends, but hadn’t connected until Sunday after a surprise performance at Ace. I grabbed his 60 second video portrait. Although the concept is simple, I’ve found the results to be pretty interesting. At a fundamental level, the human face says a lot, even without the person saying anything at all. Hope you enjoy. There are two more photos I shot of Reggie, plus a behind-the-scenes snap after the jump… Continue Reading →

chase jarvis LIVE: We Are Augustines Re-Watch

This was one of my all time favorites episodes of chasejarvis LIVE. Brooklyn-based We Are Augustines swooped into the Garage and–in between sharing amazing insight about struggle, creative vision, and inspiration–played an amazing, emotionally-charged set for us. We then followed up with a live photoshoot for forthcoming promo material for the band and release of their new album.

BTW, when you realize that you want to buy their album, sit tight. It’ll be out in a matter of weeks on iTunes and via their site. Best way to get the release date is to follow them on Twitter: @WeAreAugustines.

Audio only version of this show is here on iTunes if you want. Or here via RSS feed. Reminder for future: this video above is an edit. Gotta watch live to get the whole enchilada. Continue Reading →

Update on Dasein Installation [+ Re-Watch of Announcement]

Yowza. Just posting the chasejarvisLIVE rewatch here of the initial announcement and quick update on the project I launched just 4 days ago. (video above, audiocast version here.). Thanks to you and the worldwide creative community, the Dasein: An Invitation to Hang installation in NYC is off to an unbelievable start. I’m blown away by the images, the volume, and your response to the project. Humbled. Inspired. But we’re just getting started.

Yours truly and my on-the-ground crew have been working 18+ hours per day getting this project up to speed. I’ve been shooting like mad thanks to all the inspiration coming in from around the world, AND I’ve been looking at pictures from wakeup to sleep since Thursday. Since kickoff, we had 1000 images in the first hour and are currently averaging more than 1000 images per day. Of those, we’re printing and hanging between 100 and 350 completely fresh images everyday for the physical installation. Serious affair. Now that we’re fully up to speed and… Continue Reading →

New Project Includes You + Me — “Dasein: an Invitation To Hang”

Friends, co-consiprators, co-inspirators, and anyone else who’s just dropping in for the first time. I am so very excited. Hopefully you tuned into today’s chasejarvisLIVE broadcast where I announced my latest project called Dasein: An Invitation to Hang. In case you missed it, check out the above video and details below. In short, it’s important to me that you know enough about the project that you’d be willing to participate…to display your work right beside mine and hundreds of other photographers, artists, celebrities, etc online AND hanging physically in a prestigious location in the heart of NYC.

The short version is right here, but you should definitely read the long version, my manifesto for the project below in this blog post… But for short hand, here you go: I’m shooting for a month straight in NYC, celebrating the concept of the snapshot during an official Artist In Residency at the Ace Hotel New York. While I’m shooting I want the world to know that you are invited to join me. Not necessarily physically (although keep an eye out for that on twitter), but to be shooting creative moments, snapshots in your world, wherever that may be…. Continue Reading →
