60 Second Landscape Challenge

Erik here with a quick little weekend video challenge for y’all.  In the spirit of Chase’s 60 Second Portraits, we’ve been toying with AND wanna see some of YOUR… 60 Second Landscapes.

So here’s a challenge from us to you: Grab your video-capable capturing device and hit the streets/mountains/beaches/what-have-you’s and roll a quick one minute on the best landscape you can find. Perhaps shoot a bunch and then select your favorite. Then, post your results to YouTube with a “Chase Jarvis Weekend Challenge” tag and post a link in the comments section of this post so we can see ‘em and share ‘em.  If you feel like following some rules, we’ve got a few guidelines to follow:

  • Keep your landscapes to 60 seconds (obviously).
  • No cuts.  Keep it to one shot.
  • No timelapses, just a straight up realtime view of the world in front of you.
  • Include music if you want, but we dig hearing the ambient sounds of the view.

That’s it.  Short and simple, but sorta beautiful.  Our take is that this is easy and fresh – but we want to see your take. I’ll see if I can shake Chase down for some gifts if some cool videos are posted. Here’s my entry:

Now you go and make some stuff. Have a great weekend.

Nice! Is that 99 I hear? Love the symmetry between the smoke/steam from the West Seattle steel mill and the ferry.

  7. Erik Dixon May 6, 2011 at 10:36 am #

The ambient sounds definitely impact this scene. Diggin’ it.

  8. Adam Mayfield May 6, 2011 at 10:51 am #

This should be interesting. I get some new audio equipment today from the UPS man and I have a free weekend for once. Now, I know what I’m doing.

  9. tim May 6, 2011 at 11:24 am #

Du and there i was going to take my video and actually move it from one side to the other to do a pano. Anyway moving right along, cool idea, have the weekend to come up with something

  10. Jeremy O'Donnell May 6, 2011 at 11:25 am #

I love the movement to the left in this scene, and then the nice contrast of the timer on the bottom moving right. Well done. Ha

  11. Glenn Harris May 6, 2011 at 2:40 pm #

Did you use a Rosco fog machine in the background or something more heavy duty? And how many times did the boat have to make that run so it crossed the field of view right at the 60 seconds?

  12. Adam Coss May 6, 2011 at 3:38 pm #

    … I don’t get it.

  13. Nick Moulton May 6, 2011 at 4:43 pm #

Awesome, by chance I happen to be renting a D90 this weekend while my D700 is being repaired. I’ve never played with a video capable DSLR before. Challenge accepted ;)

  14. Bo Boswell May 6, 2011 at 6:33 pm #

Good idea. Sounds like fun. I know you said that we shouldn’t have cut scenes, but can we do panning or zooming (assuming it fits the scene)?

    • chirag May 7, 2011 at 1:51 pm #

The first one (Columbus circle) is fantastic.

    • Trudy May 8, 2011 at 9:20 am #

    Hello

I want to ask, asuming no one else has asked

if you can guide us on on the best way to encode this videos for you tube

My issue was I did the sunset http://www.youtube.com/user/SerLevArris
I then put it into Final Cut and sync the sound from my extranl audio device

I found I had alot of (birds/planes) detial that made the video for me,

but once I ran it though an encoder (handbrake) or winFF and uploaded it to your tube it looks preatty bad
