Yes Is For Wimps. Get Used To Hearing “NO”.

If you’re already a professional photographer or filmmaker, then you know that you had to hear a lot of “no” for every “yes”. If you’re not yet a pro, or perhaps more importantly if you are a pro whose enjoyed a taste of success, then hear this: Get Used To Hearing “No”.

But this isn’t a bad thing. “No” serves several functions.

1. Let “no” serve as a motivator. If you don’t win a gig from an agency or a magazine, if you lose it to another photographer, vow to win the next one. Make a plan for how to do it different, better than you did last time. Make new photos, prepare, hone your vision, whatever it takes.

2. Let “no” keep out the other people who don’t want it as bad as you do. Remember, when you’re hearing “no”, so is almost everyone else. When other artists hear “no” too much, they quit, defeated, never to return again. Don’t let that be you. When you hear “no”, let it remind you of this little post.

3. Let “no” remind you that this job isn’t for everyone, especially the uncommitted. In a round about way, every “no” should remind you that you’re in the right place, not the wrong place. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

4. Let “no” turn you into a better artist. A bunch of “no” usually doesn’t mean that you’re not talking to the right people. It usually means your work is not “there” yet. If that’s the case, see #1.

5. Mario Andretti once famously said, “If everything feels under control, you’re just not driving fast enough”. Same goes here. If you’re… Continue Reading →

Photo Of The Day. [Comments Welcome]

Happy Monday. Today, retouching is out, rawness is in.

Photo of the day. Let me know what you think.

Now I’m Calling You Out, Sir Mix-A-Lot

Ok, so this came to my inbox 100% outta left field. But I love it. We’ve never met in person, but it seems that multi-platinum, grammy-award-winning, big-butt-loving Sir Mix-A-Lot just called me out.

Alrighty, Sir Mix, you want back in the door? You got it. Here’s how: you come to my studio in Seattle and be my guest on chasejarvisLIVE on Wednesday July 6th at 10am. Lord knows that our live, worldwide audience (and yours truly) would love to meet you and could learn a thing or two. We’ll talk shop, have some laughs, we’ll do a quick photoshoot live on the air, and/or you can drop a rhyme or spin a set for us on the 1′s and 2′s.

And you can tell us all a little more about your new Facebook game. [Apparently the Seattle Post Intelligencer likes it.]

Got what it takes Mix? Let’s do this…. Continue Reading →

Artist + Photographer Ai WeiWei Released from Chinese Prison

After months of detention in a Beijing prison the Chinese government today released famed Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei on bail. Ai, arguably China’s most well known artist, was taken into custody in April amid a crackdown on dissidents and activists across China.

This is breaking news for the art world but it’s also great news to my ears personally. I’ve been moved by his work and intelligent dissent for quite some time, and became even more interested in his work last year while I was working in China on this project and had my first brush with censorship by not being able to share my work socially, using YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter from China due to the censorship of those services. Also of importance to me, and specifically why I’m sharing this here as a more personal note, is that several of Ai’s closest American friends are my dear friends. I’ve been watching that whole circle of friends/relatives live on the edge of their seats in fear for his well being for months. It’s been horrible. It’s an understatement therefore I’m beyond relieved for everyone involved.

Lastly, if you’re not familiar with Ai Wei Wei’s work, please get familiar. He has emerged as perhaps THE gigantic creative voice coming out of China, and in addition to being a photographer, creates… Continue Reading →

The Status Quo Will Do Just Fine Without You

As a matter of opinion, it’s time to get some cojones. Or whatever clever slang you’ve cooked up for the female equivalent, or whatever will help you understand the following point. Sure there’s plenty of good things to honor about the past of our photography industry. A lot of the trails have been intelligently blazed by those before us, a lot of ditches have been dug. But…ahem…generally speaking status quo in photography doesn’t know which way is up. Surely you’ve noticed.

So I ask.
What is your photographic vision?
What is your brand vision?
What is your business?
What is your marketing?
What are your effing goals?

This is not a fluff piece. This is truth: there ere are a bazillion photographers in the safe little ‘status quo’ bubble that will keep the status quo quietly marching along. So many that, in fact, it will be just fine without you.

Which is precisely why you should leave it behind.

What does that mean? It means take a chance. Or Three. Charge away from convention. Break shit. You can always go back to the status quo if you get scared or get knocked around a bit, because the reality is that it’s not going anywhere. You’ll be told that they won’t take you back if you leave, but that’s a scare tactic. In reality, they’ll take you back in a second, because… Continue Reading →

Dasein Achieving Milestones — More Excitement To Come

Whew. Just a quick note to update you on the Dasein: Invitation To Hang installation and project. In short, it’s still going gangbusters. The definition of gangbusters is open for interpretation, but here’s a few things I know:

_The quality of the work you’ve sent in is amazing, inspirational, and exciting. It breeds optimism of what thousands of talented photographers can create together.
_Hundreds of truly amazing images are still pouring in everyday from professional photographers, celebrities, amateurs, yours truly, some of the most well known shooters in the world, and everything in between.
_There are more than 15,000 images so far into the project which I haven’t taken any time to verify, but I’ve been told is one of the largest such fine art installations ever. And it continues to grow rapidly.
_The installation of our collective work has earned the attention of curators from several of the largest and most prominent Museums in NYC and the world.
_There is participation from more than 150 countries worldwide.

In short, this is larger and more successful that I’d ever imagined. Despite there only being 5 days left to have your images become a part of this project (submission period ends on Friday June 24th at midnight PDT at InvitationToHang.com) I’m getting a strong sense that this will actually be the beginning — a commencement if you will — of something much larger. Legitimate interest from many of the worlds most prestigious fine art institutions has been overwhelming and amazing… Continue Reading →

Priceless Celebrity Mugshots. Are These Portraits?

Frank Sinatra 1938

Round here we celebrate photographs. While they sometimes tell stories of love and laughter, they also sometimes tell stories of sadness, horror, or otherwise unsavory-ness. These mugshots of some of the most famous rock stars the world has ever known fall somewhere in between. Check out the confluence of stoicism, ego, and genius in this shot of Frank Sinatra (other greats from Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, David Bowie, Axl Rose and a dozen others after the jump…]

These images clearly have cultural value. Are these portraits? Where does the mugshot fit along this spectrum? Continue Reading →

Stop Trying To Get Everyone To Like Your Work

When I talk to photographers and survey the industry landscape, I see a zillion photographers trying to have all their work liked by all the people. This comes from our social animal DNA, but it’s the completely wrong approach to success – whether that be measured by your work being licensed, sold, etc, or by getting hired, shown, talked about, displayed, whatever.

Simply said, by trying to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one, especially not yourself.

But fear not (or fear less, perhaps). The answer is simple.

1. Shoot what you love.
2. Pimp that work.
3. Repeat.

People can smell whether you love what you’re shooting or not, love what you’re pimping or not, love what you’re doing or not. So you might as well effing love it for real. It’s all you’ve got.

So quit with your shifty eyes, looking at what everybody else is doing. And do your own shiznit. Yes this means you. If you’re work is priced… Continue Reading →

Calling all NYC/tri-state friends – It’s been a while since we got together in person, so let’s do it.

We’re more than halfway through the collaborative Dasein: Invitation to Hang gallery installation here in NYC (have you contributed yet?) and it’s been such a dramatic success that our friends here at the ACE Hotel, the cultural ambassadors FlavorPill & the lovely folks Tumblr are throwing us–you and me–a little party. We’ll have on display at the party an electronic slide show of all the images that have been “hanging” in the installation, plus we’re working on landing a surprise musical guest. I’ll give a little welcome address, a toast, and then we’ll be free to mingle with other like-minded creative types, and let the evening deteriorate into some good old fashioned socializing.

Here’s the deets:
WHO: You and me, like minded creative people.
WHAT: Chase Jarvis SOCIAL. Meet other creative people. Celebrate #Dasein. Bring the innernets into the flesh.
WHEN: Wednesday, June 8th. 7pm till later.
WHERE: The fabulous ACE HOTEL (downstairs in Liberty Hall). On 29th at Broadway NYC.

***IMPORTANT: Anyone 21 or older is welcome, but SPACE IS LIMITED. The only requirement is that you must RSVP here. Confirmations will be sent back to you via email and guests will be admitted on a first come/first served basis. So coming early is advised.

Enjoy Your [Demolished] Breakfast at 1000fps

I’m never one to drop a heavy post on you headed into the weekend. So this one is light. So light in fact that it floats in the air like your morning toast and coffee and orange juice you’re about to eat. You may have caught this a couple weeks ago, but I was too buried to share it. So here ’tis. Consider this while you’re grabbing brunch over the next two days. The above is the behind-the-scenes. After the jump is the final piece.

[Side note: one thing I like about this is that it's not that difficult, but the result is lovely. There is no brain surgery happening here, no mysterious lighting, no crazy hardcore effects. Relatively speaking, this is about as straight forward as it gets with a high speed camera and a commercial. Good concept. I can't say that I always prefer this style, but it's a reminder that often times simple concept, good execution makes good stuff. ]

Four Fab Photos. Do you have a fav?

Looking at more than 1000 images a day is a real treat. And pulling out 100 to 200 each day for printing is even cooler. It’s sort of like dipping my hand in a river at any one time, and being able to pull out a slice of life. Here’s four of the 150 I pulled out today. Props to their respective creators, listed below. A broad spectrum – but that’s what I love. Lemme know what you think of any/all/some of these.

Camera Geeks Unite :: Chase Jarvis TECH: Dasein Camera Arsenal [video]

I don’t talk about gear all that much, but this one goes out to you camera geeks and gearheads. So many of you have been asking about the array of cameras I’m shooting while living in NYC (and somewhat in line with yesterday’s post) we decided to whip up a quick Chase Jarvis TECH video to run you through them. Ten formats in all, from top of the line Nikons, to old Polaroids, even some vintage stuff from the 1950′s. Check it.

[And, as you might imagine, I'm burning through a bunch film while I'm experimenting with all these toys during Dasein: Invitation To Hang. As such I want to say huge thanks to B&H, Polaroid, Fuji, and the Impossible Project for backing me with film for this adventure. You can pickup any/all the tasty films I mention in the vid here from B&H, except for The Impossible Project stuff, which is best to get here...and, update, is made in the Netherlands, correction from what I said in the vid ;) ] Continue Reading →
