Reinvent Yourself – Genius Advice from Tim Ferriss [chasejarvis LIVE this Tues Aug 16]

In keeping with this spirit to look beyond just the photography industry for insight and inspiration, please join me this Tuesday, August 16 at 11:00am Seattle time, as welcome #1 New York Times best-selling author Tim Ferriss (@tferriss) for another episode of chasejarvis LIVE.

Tim was Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Business People of 2007” and is on Forbes Magazine’s “Names You Need to Know in 2011″ list. His first book, The 4-Hour Workweek, was an inspirational shot in the arm for helping me completely reinvent my work mindset, creative career, the “business” part of my job, and my work/life balance. His wisdom was important for me and — I’m guessing that when you hear how he thinks and you get to ask him a few questions yourself — it will be important for you as well.

Who: You, Me, & a worldwide gathering of creative people
What: Q&A and LIVE photo lesson with NYT best-selling author Tim Ferriss
When: this Tuesday, August 16th at 11:00am Seattle time (2 pm NYC time or GMT -8)
Where: tune in to It’s free and anyone can watch.

Among other things, we’ll specifically discuss:
_How to leave your worst clients and replace them with the coolest/most profitable ones
_How to outsource or eliminate all your least desirable tasks
_How to establish a better work/life balance
_How to attract book publishers
_How to trade a tired, long-haul career for short work bursts and frequent time off
_How these principles can guide so many other parts of your life (ala Tim’s second book).

AND…not only is Tim a genius entrepreneur & author, but he’s also a Guinness World Record holder, a National KickBoxing champion, and–you guessed it– he’s got the photography passion too. So after I squeeze outta him all the above info, plus get him to answer your questions via twitter (@chasejarvis, hastag #cjLIVE), and more, I’m going to give Tim a live photography lesson and then let HIM shoot MY portrait.

Tim’s never shot a real studio setup in his life, only a point and shoot camera, so I’m going to show him how to set up a full kit–seamless backdrop, studio lighting, pocket wizards, the camera and everything else–and then, he’s going to shoot MY portrait. Should be informative and…well…good for some laughs. So even if you’ve got all the business stuff locked in (which I doubt you do…) there’ll still be an informative photo segment with a few surprises.

***Lastly, for a little fun and to pimp this show, we’ll be giving away a signed copy of each of Tim’s last two books, 4 Hour WorkWeek and 4 Hour Body, to the two people who send out the most interesting tweet that contains the URL (or short url) to THIS post AND hastag #cjLIVE, starting right now and ending at the beginning of the show on Tuesday. Enter as many times (tweets) as you want.

Ahh, too bad, I probably can’t watch because I’m going to Spain on that day, let’s pray there is wifi over there :)

    • Royd August 15, 2011 at 8:41 am #

      This sounds excellent!

    • Anonymous August 15, 2011 at 12:45 pm #

      Boohoo, you’re off to Spain.

Time for yet another reinvention – short cycle reincarnation. If I keep doing it, I’ll either hit the right one or end up in a psych hold somewhere! ;-)

    I’ll be there!

  3. Allen August 15, 2011 at 9:10 am #

Lol, I posted up your editing 101 page on his blog about 3 months ago and now you’re bff’s. The Internets never cease to amaze me. This should be a fun show.

  4. Phil Watson August 15, 2011 at 9:13 am #

Will this be available to watch at a later date?

    • Chase August 15, 2011 at 10:06 am #

Phil – we can’t guarantee that there will be a re-watch or, if there is, when it will air, since it’s always subject to our commercial schedule for my “real” job. Also, if we can do the re-watch, we don’t broadcast the photoshoot parts (some of the best content) because it’s too large a file to repost to youtube.

REALLY hope you can catch it LIVE.

      • Dylan Johnston August 16, 2011 at 7:14 pm #

I only managed to watch a small amount before getting wound up with my slow internet conection, please rebroadcast so i can let it buffer for a while first, sadly, as you say, it looks like imissed “the best content” hope all is well

Sounds like a great event, but I have issue with the phrase “Reinvent yourself” It is way overused and conveys the the wrong idea. There is nothing wrong with yourself that needs reinventing. You are you! What needs to be done is to stretch yourself and go beyond your comfort zone.

Chase: This should be SUCH a good podcast/livecast/whatevercast… Tim is a great writer. A fantastic public speaker. And I’m in complete and awe of his ability to system-ize business, language learning, exercise, or just about anything that he sets his mind to.

As a quick aside, his new book — The Four Hour Body — is fantastic, and has really changed the way in which my wife and I approach diet and exercise.

  8. Jakob Kjøller August 15, 2011 at 12:25 pm #

I am looking forward to it, i loved 4-hour work week :)

  9. david August 15, 2011 at 1:03 pm #

I never jumped on the 4-hour anything bandwagon, but I’m certainly on yours, Chase. I’ll be there.

  10. Hance August 15, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

I can’t stand Tim Ferriss. The guy is so full of himself and reminds me of a smooth talking, know it all, sleezy car salesman. I’ve tried reading his book “4 Hour Work Week” and it’s filled with him bragging like a narcissist about how great he is. I feel like he may be the next Donald Trump in the making and not in a good way. I really like you Chase but I can’t and won’t be tuning in for anything that has to do with Mr. Ferriss. Good luck with the show, you have a lot more patience than I do!

    • Chase August 15, 2011 at 2:47 pm #

Well @hance, you sound pretty opinionated about him, so I wont’ try to change your mind, but i’d be completely remiss in not saying that I think you must not actually know Tim. He’s not full of himself. He’s smart and articulate. And in fact he’s more hungry to gain knowledge and share it than almost anyone I know. Hope you reconsider and tune in.

      • HLG August 15, 2011 at 4:06 pm #

I’ll second that. If he sounds proud of his accomplishments, he should be. He lives the kind of life that most of us can only dream of doing. He has the courage to actually go out and do it, instead of being too scared to try. If we all had half the guts that Tim did, we wouldn’t be stuck in jobs we hate and married to THINGS we don’t need.

I soooo wish I could watch it live, but unfortunately there’s no way that I can break away at that time. (sad face) I’m really really really really hoping that at least part of it will be available later to watch. I’d really love to see what Tim has to say about photography, given the fact he doesn’t really seem to favor offering services (vs products).

  11. lirpa August 15, 2011 at 7:31 pm #

Tim Ferriss is a curious creature. I can’t look away!

    • lirpa August 15, 2011 at 7:38 pm #

Also, I totally agree with Chase and HLG! TF is one of the good guys!

  12. Dennis August 15, 2011 at 9:01 pm #

This looks amazing! Going to be tuning in for sure!

  13. Michael Zelbel August 16, 2011 at 1:42 am #

Chase, you got a really great guest today. He can truly touch lives.

I am so grateful that Tim shared his knowledge in his books: After reading 4-hour-work week I started my dream business (Photography) besides my regular job. It’s developing fine.

After reading his second book at the beginning of this year, I changed my eating habits. I lost most of my bodyfat (and three jeans sizes) and went from “a little bit chubby” to “sixpack abs”. I could not be more happy. And my wife could not be more happy.

All the best for todays show!
    — Michael

  14. Richard Ford August 16, 2011 at 4:54 am #

Met Tim a couple of years back in Beijing when I took him out with his travel buddies with an organised “Tweetup”. Very cool dude. Made others slow down and walked with me as I lagged behind with my slowly recovering broken ankle!

  19. Ruslan August 16, 2011 at 10:22 am #

I missed it, is there going to be a video available to view?

  20. Erik Pettee August 16, 2011 at 10:41 am #

This will be my first time watching a LIVE episode. Pretty stoked for the subject of Tim Ferris.

Nice idea also showing a countdown and some behind the scenes footage of your setup and equipment while we wait. Transparency like this is always cool and builds trust with your audience.

  21. Linda Thompson August 16, 2011 at 12:56 pm #

I just have to say….Tim, you are braver than me. That you will put yourself out there to learn something on air while other people watch, being willing to feel awkward and nervous and still going for it and learning, is amazing to me. Thank you for showing me that it really is possible to be brave! lol :) And thank you Chase for setting it all up! Always lots of fun to get to “share” in conversations about photography, business, and life.

  22. slim August 17, 2011 at 12:15 am #

Awsome Chase and crew!! I was feeling a little somber today due to hitting one of those creative blocks for the past few days and watching this reminded me the reason I got involved with creating. It was because of the fun I had doing it! You could see the fun Tim had behind the camera and that lifted my mood. The infromation was great and served as a reality check for me and snapped me out of the weird mood i been in so thanks 4 that.

  23. Jayna August 17, 2011 at 1:18 am #

Please re-broadcast this if possible.. when possible. Bummed that I missed out on this because of a work do.

    • Christine August 17, 2011 at 5:49 pm #

Hey Keri – sorry, where’s the rewatch? I’m on a crappy internet connection and trying to figure it out. Is it just on the Chase Jarvis LIVE page and available until the next episode on Aug 24th? Hoping I can still watch this as soon as I get to a better connection in the next two days!

      • Alison August 18, 2011 at 7:37 pm #

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
