Find Your Thing And Do That Thing…

Find your thing and do that thing better than anybody else does that thing even if you think
that thing has no value because I promise you that it does. And I promise you that other people will see this value too.

[I'll continue to post these little notes I scribble out--little journal notes--if you like dig em. Please let me know here, G+ or Twitter. I write them using Amazing Type-writer app for iPhone. Happy holidays.]

Dig it. I have gotten a lot from your blog this year and it has inspired me to get back to doing what ‘ I ‘ love to do. Sometimes it’s an 90 minute interview and sometimes it’s a simple reminder like this. Either way, it does the trick. Thank you! Happy holidays and a cheers to the new year!

    Hey Chase

Coming to your site every so often and seeing stuff like this has value; a lot of value.

What a great post; you could add “even if it’s the tiniest, seemingly insignificant little thing, like scribbling in a journal” .. that has value. That IS value.

Thanks for what you do, and all my best to you and yours for the holiday season and a great new year. Be well.

    Cheers

    Carl

I definitely dig it, Chase! You have a strong philosophical side, combine that with your wisdom and you have the ability to uniquely share seriously sage advice. Who knows.. maybe you’ll be up there with your buddy Heidegger some day!

Happy Holidays, C. Here’s to a rad advice filled new year!

Honestly, I really don’t care if I do it better than anyone else. I want to do it the best I can do it at the moment I am doing it. Anyone who does it does better than I only makes the world a finer place.

The thing is whatever avenue, career/pursuit that you attempt there will always be people better than you in you chosen field (unless youre chase jarvis). This is in no way a negative, just a constant reminder to push yourself to be the best you can be

It sucks when you live in a smaller city where your ‘thing’ has no practical value & has a foreign vibe even to local would be models, maekup/hair people & even photographers!.. Thanks for the encouraging message!

since your town offers little options to shoot & sell your stuff; shoot your best stuff & sell it on the web. stock is a great source to fill anyones niche. your market is the world, not your own town.

check out several sites ( stock ), and see what they are looking for. then, shoot it and sell it to them.

You might like this quote from Steve Martin:

“When people ask me, ‘how do you make it in show business,’ or whatever, what I always tell them — and nobody ever takes note of it ‘cuz it’s not the answer they wanted to hear…but I always say, ‘Be so good they can’t ignore you.’”

so true, and so simple, somehow we are programmed to look at others and somehow think we have to do what others do or did.

The first steps of doing your own thins are so hard…

Hey Chase, great content as always, and I really enjoyed your recent interview with one Ramit Sethi. Anyway, I read this really awesome blurb and I couldn’t help but think about Austin Kleon, creator of Newspaper Blackout. Heard of it? I’m sure you can get really creative with the technique as well as creating awesome content for your bloggers. Here’s a link to Blackout: http://newspaperblackout.com/

Hope it inspires! Kleon’s releasing a book in 2 months called “How to Steal Like An Artist” and I’m sure you’ll enjoy that read. :)

That sounds very appealing. But how do you know that to be universally true? It is just your opinion, right?

  33. Joaquin December 30, 2011 at 11:04 pm #

Chase, you are an inspiration to many photographers and this post is a perfect example why. If only more people would seek “their thing” rather than wander aimlessly. Though I have to say that doing something better than everyone else is no easy task–even if you’re passionate about what you do.

Wow, I just found this blog. Awesome,

I just spent the last 3 days reading your entire archive.

The commitment to being the best at your craft is fanatically inspiring,

This post is right on the money. It’s great to see that people at the top of their game deserve to be there.

This is the best advice ever given, really, along with that one of Steve Jobs

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs

I read this post back in December and it always seems to pop back in my head. This one and another one you posted in January… “The next time you have a great idea don’t write it down, just do your great idea.” These words are awesome Chase!!!

Thanks for impacting my life and inspiring me to keep learning and discovering new possibilities.

    Cheers,
    Nomi
