    I think the D4 is a great addition to the Nikon family. Although I wish they would have played the MP game here and the FPS game a little harder as well, just to keep that spots/studio edge. 18 or 20MP and 14FPS would be the perfect mix of speed and studio availability. Rather than headlines of “Nikon gets close to _____ with the D4″ it could be “Nikon kicks _____’s Ass in photo AND video!”

    Either way it’s a wonderful camera. Would love to try one out at a few concerts!

      Adam, I’m looking forward to trying this out at a concert. That’s what I did with my D700 and, once I used it, I kicked my D300 to the curb, even though I enjoyed using it. Can’t wait to purchase mine.

        Hi Ellen- I kicked my D200, D90 now using D7K for these low light events. Can’t wait for the D800!

        This new video capability kicks @$$. My DP friends are going to love it.

      It may be 2 or 3 years old but the D3s is still top notch, improving on that can’t be easy, the only thing that has let Nikon down over the last few years is its video functionality, but thankfully they seem to have nailed it – the D4 looks like an absolute beast! Audio control and clean HDMI out is a massive step forwards – I just hope those video features make it into the D400.

      I just sold my D4 and upgraded to the D4s, i was super nervous at first, but i kid you not this thing is awesome, i don’t know if Nikon will ever be able to top this one. It should cost way more.

      Yet another rant along the lines of “It won’t make you a better photographer…ect”.
      Heard it all before mate so take your whining somewhere else.

      It’s a camera aimed at working PROFESSIONALS who may well benefit from the extra features. If it’s a tool for them then why not?
      It’s not aimed at the likes of whining wannabes like yourself who are just bitter because you know you’ll NEVER be able to afford one.
      You can’t even get this toy into your pram to throw it out!

      I am also disappointed that they didn’t bring more off-center AF points or at least redistribute the points so that they cover a larger area of the frame.
      Also it seems weird to me that the viewfinder coverage is only 97% in the crop modes, this makes tight compositions a pain.
      Moreover, you get far less shots out of one battery charge compared to the D3s.
      Hopefully, they will do better with the D5…

    The numbers look good, and for when I go to shoot airshows they will be quite helpful, especially that motordrive.
    I’m going to reserve judgement until I actually try one and see how the images turn out for me.

    Hi Chase, it sounds a damn interesting camera to me. I’ve still got and have had since new the Nikon D3 and loved it when I upgrade from my D2x cause it seemed to iron out all of them little things that I think needed improving on the D2x. Im really interested to see how the uncompressed HDMI output fairs up. If its only 25mbps onto the card I wonder what the HDMI uncompressed will get?

    The metering upgrade will no doubt make a massive change to shooting along with the face recognition and it being able to sample and focus between each shot at 10fps, that sounds wild for when you’re shooting event photography, well for me anyways. Normally though im shooting BMX photography and packshot stuff so I don’t know how much it will improve them areas for me but im after an upgrade and the extra stops of sensitivity would have been handy on a few shoots I did recently.

    I don’t know if you know or if you find out but how many stops of latitude does it have, if thats the right question. All it is was recently I was shooting stills for a behind the scenes of a movie where they were using the Arri Alexa and that thing has 8 stops of dynamic range at 800 ASA and they could get so much more detail in the highlights and shadows than my D3 could ever dream of! We were shooting at the same ISO/shutter/focal length and aperture and the Arri was wiping the floor with me haha.

    Anyways, can’t wait for your review of one, it’ll be a couple of months before I can afford one

    The buffer appears to be at least twice as deep as the D1X, which is arguably more practical than outright FPS. I am surprised that the native ISO range doesn’t go higher than the D3s. 4 Hi+ settings seems a bit odd, is there really such a big drop in IQ after 12800?

      Instead of raising ISO sensitivity, I believe that Nikon concentrated more on noise reduction. I’ve seen in previews that the D4 has a stop better noise reduction throughout the range. D4 ISO 12800 = D3S ISO 6400. Quite amazing in my opinion.

      I thought I’d read somewhere that the iso rating system only went as high as 12800. That may be the reason for not having a standard rating for higher.

    I am sure the D4 is a great camera, just like the D3s was and will continue to be one.
    That said, I think the big camera makers are really missing the point here by concentrating on video while keeping the SLR model in its 1950s form. I really believe that there is a lot of room for creative solutions to SLR that will truly make them better machines for everyone. Here was my reaction to a post on G+ yesterday:
    There are many things I would like to see in my camera before I look at video. How about INTEGRATED wi-fi and GPS. If my 2oz smartphone can do it, I am sure the gigantic SLRs can too…how about more customization, smaller yet still sturdy bodies…the current form factor is a dinosaur of the past…How about modular cameras, exchangeable sensors…etc…I could ramble on forever

      I agree that the form factor of the Dslr is hitting it age but I dont want to see our beloved Dlsr’s end up the size of a point and shoot!

        Agreed, but between a P&S and a 3 pound beast, I am sure we can find a happy medium (for the record, I find the combo of my d700 with my 70-200 f/2.8 to be so heavy that I vowed to never take it with me on my travels again – and I am a travel photographer!).

          Totally agree! I use D700 bodies because they’re “lighter.” But, they’re still monsters. In the past I would sling two bodies around my neck, one on my shoulder and a Domke bag on the other and go shoot all day and into the night. Not now. Today to shoot DSLR I work out of a rolling case I trudge behind me like a homeless tourist.

          To ease the burden, last year I bought the Leica M9 and lenses. Sure, it’s never going to be as good as Nikon in many ways, but the difference in size and weight is enough to make me look sideways and ignore its shortcomings. The files, when you understand the quirks, are spectacular.

          So if Leica can produce a professional grade digital camera not much larger than their legendary M bodies, then Nikon can surely build something that doesn’t more closer resemble a concrete block than an F3.

      WIFI and by extension GPS should have been standard in pro cameras two generations ago. There is NO reason not to have those integrated.

    You cannot compare the Fuji Xpro 1 to the new Nikon D4 – Two completely different category’s of cameras. And how could you even think of comparing the Fuji xrpo 1 to this marvel of a machine. everyone seems to think Mirror-less is the way to go for the future of photography but I think that’s just absurd!

    What I would like to know:
    Does it line-skip? Or will it read the full sensor and then downsample?
    Will the hdmi be 8-bit or 10-bit? I understand that hoping for 10-bit is a little to much, but on the other hand Nikon does not have a video department to protect.
    And lastly, will they have to have a 25p option?! Everyone in Europe needs it!

    Im a video guy, and if it downsamples instead of line-skip and has 25p… Im sold!

    I shoot with a d700, d7000, and the d3 when I’m working events, and I’m having a hard time justifying the price of the d4 vs. the rumored specs on the d800.

    Seems like Nikon is aiming this at the action photographer, possibly dSLR filmmakers too.

    The iso boost is great, but I don’t find myself hurting for more than what I get with the d700 anyhow… so it’s not attractive enough in and of itself.

    Probably the best things I see are the increased light sensitivity for AF (a major issue currently with the d3 IMO), and the new image processor. If they fall in line with the d7000, it’ll be a must for anyone shooting events or sports (I would think).

    I’m waiting to see a d800 first though… if the AF on the d800 is the same, and Expeed 3, then the increase in overall image size is more important to me than the other features.

    Love the separation between the wedding/sports oriented D4 and the studio-oriented D800…really smart product planning. Ultimately will mean more sales for Nikon as the two will do very different things very well.

    This is Nikon’s attempt of catching the 1Dx so they do not lose a market on the professional SLRs, they made it cheaper, pushing everything 1Dx doesn’t have right into Nikon’s new camera. And to be fair to say, it is lower than the 1Dx on most specs.
    I think they should have made a better camera rather than running after canon!

      I’d guess that Canon did the paper release of the 1Dx so they wouldn’t look as though they were lagging behind when Nikon was able to make an official release earlier than Canon.

      Running low on spec doesn’t mean lower on performance. 10 FPS is more than enough i think…. MP war is irrelevant to discuss anymore. Many Canon camera had higher spec than nikon including entry and mid level DSLR, but talking about picture quality, higher spec doesn’t mean higher quality picture.

    Well I think it’s wonderful to see the latest flagship in the Nikon HDSLR family. I would really want one of these beasts, but can’t afford one unfortunately, but I still wish they would have boosted the native ISO limits, the MP count up to 24 and the fps rate from 11 to 14 to compete with the Canon shooters. Otherwise I hope I can have one of my own sometime in the near future!

    Where is the D800!! D4 pretty nice. Love the back-lite buttons…a true “night vision” (Hi ISO) camera. 1 kilo of fun ;) 6K hmm currently out of my price range, however i don’t see D3s owners jumping on this fast! just my 0.02

    The new XQD cards are lightning fast and should have completely replaced the compact flash card slot for a dual XQD slot system like the dual SDXC card slot system of the D7000. If they held off on abandoning the CF card slot, they should have offered a battery that shared the same shape and contacts. So instead of introducing a revolutionary, standards-setting camera, Nikon introduced more of an “interim” camera, or something that slowly brings users over to the new standards. Professionals are usually on the cutting edge and don’t need to be bled over to the new technology like the average consumer would. A transition to new media storage with faster read/write speeds would have been welcomed with open arms. Now D4 users are forced to carry 2 forms of memory cards and 2 types of card readers. A inconvenience brought on by poor product development.

    I’m going to throw the question back at you. Why? While I read up on camera technology, I have not, nor do I know how to compare the highest tier cameras because I have not used them. Sure, you can compare technical specs and crunch numbers, but I think it boils down to preference and the job at hand. I haven’t used any of the Canon 1D or the Nikon equivalent cameras, but I do have a 5D Mark II.

    Do you find yourself limited by your D3X/D700s? Can you justify the cost of an upgrade? Why would anyone want to upgrade to this camera from the D3X (assuming they aren’t sponsored). Is it the native video support (1080p) that will push people into buying this?

    Chase, what was the most notable upgrade for you in your history as a photographer? I can see film to digital (and that may not be seen as an ‘upgrade’, just a change) being one of them, but how about digital specifically? Has upgrading from one model to another made your job orders of magnitudes easier? Does it not have to be orders of magnitudes? Is a *little* bit easier enough for you to upgrade?

    I can see the top tiered media outlets upgrading for the competitive edge (NYT, Nat Geo, etc). That seems to be the target market for this tier of cameras. What do you think?

    I’m not a FX shooter, but would it not have been better to have the MP closer to 20, 16 seems a bit low, especially compared to the 5D MKII with 21 MP.
    That being said, I wish I could afford it and finally go full frame.

    Chase, I’m curious why Nikon chose to not use resources on an extended resolution sensor like the Canonites are so accustomed to. One hand would suggest that the resources were simply used elsewhere, or that the market didn’t demand such resolutions. The other hand might suggest that they were conserving pixel pitch and I can’t wait to read more about the capture and processing power of the chip. When low light photos start hitting the tubes, I’m sure we’ll all have plenty to talk about. True that few of us are shooting billboards, but some of us wedding and social photographers depend on cropping in post more than the rest of us, so would’ve like to see a little more beef from the sensor.

    I’m really glad that Nikon is aware of its motion market, and the emphasis on video output options and high speed shooting (wow, >10fps?) lets creative professionals grow with the industry and focus a lot more on video work. I think this is a killer benefit, and I hope it encourages semi-pros and pros to take the Chase path and start experimenting with mixed media. Hell yes for uncompressed video.

    Only bummer I see is the Compact Flash’s return. True it’s a pro standard, and I’m curious where XQD will take our community’s data management, but I’m a tremendous fan of the portability of the SD card – it has been my ideal solution for quick transfers to laptops in the event of emergencies, quick presentations to clients on the iPad (with Apple’s SD reader), and especially in affordability and availability. On the road, if you need an SD card, a short stop at a consumer electronics store is all that’s required. Probably not the same case with CF, and especially XQD for a little while. Though I’m excited about new data rates that necessitate the card media market’s growth.

    Sorry, long winded. I’m excited that Nikon overcame the Japanese disaster and is back to grindstone putting pressure on Canon. It’s a great time to be a photographer! Chase, thanks for all the education and inspiration.

    Uncompressed video output, this is cool.. On paper it seems like the d4 will beat the canon 1dx for video but not for stills… But for now we can only judge numbers

    As someone who is already heavily invested with a few D3ses,
    I don’t plan to upgrade any time soon.

    I am, however, waiting for the new D800.

    I think the d4 is an amazing new audition to Nikon’s already outstanding line up of cameras.
    I’d love to see them bring out an X with a ridiculous amount of pixels. To let everyone know who is boss.
    I’d also love to be able to afford one.
    Will be along time till I can go out and pre order a brand new flagship Nikon.
    But one day I will.

    At first I feel desapointed because of rumor about D800 and is 36Mpx. 16 Mpx is really less than half of 36, and when you think like that it’s desapointing to have half of something.

    But after rethink, this camera have georgous caracteristics for ambiant light or action shooting with uncontroled light environnement. It already have a market to fullfill.

    I know there are physical limitation with mpix and a good picture is more than just a bunch of pixel. But I fell like having 20+mpix cheaper than the D3x from Nikon could be nice for me.

    Hi Chase and Team,

    If Nikon is reading this, well the biggest gripe from most Wedding photographers is that of the CF and XQD cards, they should’ve just stuck with one similar type. Two types of cards is a hassle.
    Even for videographers who would appreciate the XQD speed, they would most likely utilize the HDMI output for storing the videos.

    Aside from that.. Great camera! :)

    We’re all in the same boat insofar as we haven’t actually touched it yet – but it seems to me that this is really just a D3S with video. Up to now it’s only the Canon that is capable of delivering professional-quality video – so we use Sony Video cams, or hire in a guy with a 5D. So for us the critical issue is how it compares with Canon for video. If it’s not so good – it’s dead. If it’s equal – OK: but if it’s better, then Nikon users like me will be rejoicing like never before! And a detail – the big drawback with Canon’s SLR video is only being able to shoot up to 20 mins – whereas our Sonys can shoot continuously for 2 hours. Have Nikon cracked that? Let’s see.

    Chase (and everyone reading),

    This is the camera I have been waiting 2+ years for! I’ve been very vocal about Nikon adding serious video tools to a camera ever since the 5Dmk2 came out. I was positive they would do it… I had no idea it would take them this long though. I’ve been holding out, and I’m glad I waited.

    I’m terribly excited about the uncompressed video out HDMI – that really is the killer feature of this camera and what will make it a hit with video shooters. Bypass all that compression and record to an AJA Ki Pro mini and you’re join got have some beautiful ProRes footage to work with. There are a ton of other smaller bullet points that are exciting as well – 1/8th stop aperture changes while recording, lighted buttons, and the built-in software for controlling wirelessly via iPad and WT-5… AWESOME!

    A few things I wish were a little different – would have liked to seen 2 of the same memory type, whether it be XQD or CF. Just make it the same so I only have to have one reader and one type of card. I understand that they wanted to keep CF for prior shooters, but included XQD for future. One of those things that will just have to be worked around. Not a deal breaker.

    As mentioned above, I think GPS and wi-fi integration would have been great, especially GPS. Someday every camera will, I wish that would have started with the D4.

    This has the potential to be the perfect camera for someone like me – an independent photographer/videographer that likes to shoot everything, and want’s to do it all with one body. I say potential because I need to use it first, I can’t wait to get my hands on one to see how it is all implemented and the actual results of all the specs. All that on paper looks great, but it has to be implemented well and easy to get around and use. I don’t think Nikon will drop the ball on this part.

    I see many above are quite excited with the D4. I personally am not so much. It’s always interesting to see where the technology goes, but it is obvious in today’s world that technology is way ahead of any consumer product. I am curious about video capabilities, but only to see how close it is to RED or other pro systems. I wonder what is Nikon’s plan with D800 (and then D4X probably too). If it’s gonna be 36mp as they suggest, it will be bonkers for a small format camera, and it will compete with medium format quite strongly. We will see.

    All love from my point of view, i’m getting one of these since i sold my trusty old D3.
    I except nothing but good stuff from this camera, for me it feels like a great camera since they upgraded the video section.
    Yeah, i’m very positive about this, to me this is a tool to help me do good stuff. Pixelpeeping is not for me, and there is always gonna be something better around next corner, if you’re into that, which i am not.

    I think it looks like a first-rate professional workhorse. The improved AF and output features will surely be tempting for many in Olympics year. The video quality sounds excellent – and combined with improved AF I can imagine it being used to produce great movie clips in difficult situations (follow-focus on a bride and groom during their first dance – dim light, limited DOF, but camera helping to ensure that moving couple always in focus – mmm). McNally’s comments about IQ (especially skin tones and softer, less contrasty gradation into shadows) is very interesting also. If they would just cut off that big grip I’d probably buy it.

    As it is, I fear it’s just too much camera for me. I’ve had a D700 since they first appeared and have been waiting for a long time for an upgrade with video. I have a horrible sinking feeling that I will be waiting a lot longer, as the rumoured D800 specs don’t sound like the camera I am waiting for. Performance at high ISOs will be the deciding factor – if it’s worse than the D700 I fear it’ll be another looong year before I can upgrade. I hope very much to be proved wrong on that score, and look forward to seeing images from both cameras.

    This is a nice addition but not really necessary. If Nikon wants to make a splash MF should really be considered. 50-80 mega pixel cam I am looking at a few MF systems and I think Nikon would benefit from this untapped market.

    While announcements of new cameras is always a little exciting, the pouring over tech specs drives me crazy. There are some comments to this affect above. I think the more interesting question, especially in light of Trey Ratcliff’s post on Wednesday (, is what is the future of DSLR’s? I think most of us could agree that a mechanically flipping mirror housed in a heavy, bulky body seems a bit archaic. With the variations in micro 4/3’s, ILC, and especially some recent offerings from Sony like the NEX cameras, I think DSLR’s will have some serious competition, even for various types of “professional” photography. Even the Sony A77 has some damn impressive hands on reviews when compared to Canon or Nikon!

    To be honest, I wish I could justify getting one, but I can’t. I have only had my D3s for… about 17 months, and I really love it. Don’t get me wrong, if I had $6000 to spare, or a real need for a full fledged backup cam (or a need to turn my D3s into one) I would get this camera in a heartbeat. I love the high-ISO utility, the feel of the Nikon bodies, and the look of the files I get out of it/them.

    I’m more interested in the 85/1.8G because I want a longer fast lens, and I just got the 50/1.4G… I’m loving that though, and my old Ai-S 105/2.5 will … well… it’ll do something. :) my AF-S 80-200 is great, but I really do want that separation that I would get from the 85.

    There’s really more to be changed in my compact/backup/vacation camera system currently. I’m deeply curious about that Fuji X Pro 1, since my Nex 5 is… nice but, not perfect. I was thinking of upgrading to a 5n until I saw that X Pro 1 slip/announcment/leak/whatever.

    My stable of film and digital cameras serves me well right now, and I have no compelling reason to upgrade from the D3s to this new fantastic tool. It looks great, yes, but I can’t justify/afford it right now. I’m first and foremost a photographer, but I have toyed with video whenever I can. I can’t wait to see what chase does with this beast ;)

    kinda disappointed they have move the way canon have to 2 different slots (1 x XQD and 1 x CF) 2 xcf is far more useful esp if your doing time lapse photography, it also save on having to buy new XQD Cards)

      I do agree with most people–having two different media slots is a pretty poor idea. Look at the Canon 1D MKIV…supposedly, one could use the SD slot for video, and CF for photo. But, as it turns out, almost no one shoots both video and photo on the same body at the same time (that I know of. I could be horribly wrong, maybe Chase uses his D3s, now maybe the D800/D4 in exactly that fashion). This tells me that a D4s could be on the horizon with twin, or triple XQD slots and maybe hitting that 12FPS with insane write speeds and buffer-size.

    The video abilities and HDMI uncompressed out are great. And they need to tie in with the digital media recorders (AJA Ki, Pix 240, etc) which will start to kick all these 5DMKIIs off of commercial productions (as they have dirty screens an compression on the HDMI displays). The post workflow would would welcome a hard drive hand off with no transcoding of footage. Definitely on track for what’s needed now.

    The most intriguing feature to me is the Ethernet port. I haven’t seen it talked about much, but this is a sweet addition for those that shoot tethered. Reason being, USB speeds are slow and get slower the longer your USB cable. With gigabit Ethernet you have high speed file transfer, and you don’t compromise speed over distance. I didn’t read anywhere that the D4 supports gigabit, but I would assume it would. Wish I could afford the D4, but at $6,000 I’ll stick with the D700 for a while longer. I would rather invest in better glass than a body with lots of extra cool features.

    I’m no pro (yet;)) and have no experience with high end DSLRs at all so my opinions should (and will) be taken as so. I think the D4 losses a little bit compared to the D1X on paper, but I’m quite sure that it will be super-awesome camera and after all it’s some 800USD cheaper.
    I don’t even think comparing high end nikons and canons has much sense or practical impact (except for the marketing, brand image…), not that they weren’t comparable, but photographer buying high-end camera is not very likely to switch to the “other side” just because the other one has higher res metering senser or whatever.
    I’d say photographer at this level has made his decision about the brand a long time before, when he was choosing his first DSLR and I think most of the pro photographers wouldn’t go for the other brand just because of minor advantages of the competitors.
    What I think is more important for the camera makers is to make great entry level dslrs to attract starting photographers, because once they’ve decided to buy a camera of certain brand, they will probably stick with it for the rest of the time they’re photographing.

    Not impressed by marketing numbers. Let’s see some results first. For me the more interesting part is to see how (fast) the D4 technology drips down into the whole Nikon stack. It’s like F1 racing, only a few can afford it and need it. But we all enjoy bits of that tech stuff in our own cars

    TO be clear, I’m a Canon shooter and I’ve been tempted to convert for some time.

    Nikon still looks like they hit it out of the Park for me on my side of the fence. Shooting with 5DMk2 and upset with its AF ability and comparing my high ISO files to those of Nikon D3s shooters, I’ve been very very jealous.

    I’m not thrilled that it would seem both Canon and Nikon are introducing new AF systems now. I was going to sell gear and save money and buy a 1Dx, but I’ve been concerned that its new AF system would be a new system for all of us to be guinea pigs for…

    However, I must say, Nikon coming in at $6k and Canon coming at $7k (for now, until they actually release it) Gives me some more interest in looking at a Canon to Nikon conversion.

    The one thing holding me back from the conversion is that I own a lot of glass, A LOT, I would even say – TOO MUCH. So I need to sit back and think why do I have what I have, do I really need a 300/2.8/IS and a 600/4/IS – Do I still want to shoot nature as a hobby OR is it time to stop playing games and move forward with my weddings and portraits and give up the long glass and focus on the stuff that sort of pays bills…

    I think Nikon got it 98% right. They HAD to go with the NEW Flash Card memory, I just dislike that you lose the dual CF Slots, I liked that idea a lot on the D3s and its interesting to see where that flash memory card will take off now that both cameras have both slots.

    I am going back to the SpreadSheet to see about a conversion…

    I love it! To be able to monitor Audio from the camera, and adjust levels is great! I am currently using a d7000 and a sony nx5u for video, and I would love to have one camera that i can do it all with. The video camera will never be my first choice when I grab 1 camera so seeing better video added in is great. But personally I dont need more pixels than a D700. But i would have loved more dynamic range, 5k recording, 1080 60p. But like many, I dont like the idea of having to buy new memory cards right now. The reason i chose the sony was because it and the d7000 both used sd cards.

    For those waiting for a d800, im sure it has its place. Portrait shooters and studio photogs will love it. For me it has very little purpose, for now. Maybe in the future 36mp will be useful, but im still getting amazing 24×36 images out of my d700. I would like to know if it is a self cleaning sensor though… that would be big

    I’ve done my best to ignore most of Nikon’s product launches mostly because I don’t have the budget to contemplate upgrades, but this camera…I WANT this camera. My most favorite aspects are the dual orientation shutter releases (I shoot a lot in portrait aspect and my writs are about to give after 10 hours of shooting like that) and the wide ISO range. I had wanted a D3, but wasn’t craving one. I’m craving this camera. I can’t wait to hear/read some product reviews on it. My poor D300 is gonna be jealous.

      It’s not a dying breed. It is impossible to make proper optical viewfinders for mirrorless cameras that works for all lenses since they would have to adapt to all possible focal lengths, even exotic adapted lenses. That’s completely impractical when someone mounts a 600mm lens to a Micro 4/3 camera which would effectively give you a 1200mm equivalent. And an OVF is something only few people would be willing to work without. I shoot a lot of dance, and I certainly couldn’t imagine working without one at all.

      The optical viewfinders of pseudo-rangefinders like the soon-to-be-announced Fuji X-Pro 1 (the first of Fuji’s series of “Lookaleicas” that supports interchangeable lenses and has a genius hybrid viewfinder) will fail as soon as you mount a telephoto lens. DSLR technology is still the best solution for these situations. Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept and I’ll probably get one of those Fujis at some point and I certainly will use the EVF in certain situations, but it is not going to replace my Nikon system anytime soon.

      EVFs have become better, but that doesn’t mean they will be able to replace OVFs. With an EVF you see what the camera sees. I want to see what is actually there so I can adjust the camera so it sees what I want it to see and how I want it to see. I don’t need WYSIWYG-information about what I’m going to have shot, I need information about what I am shooting. Inevitable slight lag and blocked view when an image is being written to card are additional problems. And when shooting long exposures in extremely low light, you get nothing but noisy garbage in your EVF. It’s not just an irrational fear of a new and different system. It’s a solution to a different problem.

      Focusing is another issue. Mirrorless cameras are nowhere near where DSLRs are and won’t be for a few years (you can’t do 3D tracking with contrast AF for example). There will always be a place for DSLRs, mirrorless cameras are great and will replace DSLRs for some tasks, especially for hobbyists, but not for the thing that DSLRs are great at and certainly not the market the D4 is aimed at. Sometimes cameras don’t have to be small and light as much as they have to be flexible, fast, robust, adaptable, professional, and reliable.

      My take on Trey’s opine is that for “what he does” he is correct. It applies to him and to those who do what he does, but, to claim that instamatic camera size digital files will give the artist/creator/photographer the resouces needed to produce top notch work in other venue of image media creation is just plain silly.

        Agree. EVF turned on all the time will just suck up battery, get dead pixels and will need to be replaced versus OVF.
        Being a bright screen it wlll be a headache to use after awhile.

        Mirrorless is the advantage for superior framerate and quiet operation in certain situations.

        [Models use the sound of the click to change pose though-but the already make this fake click sound in compacts-haha.]

    I think the D4 is in an interesting spot, mostly because of the new CF card format. While it makes sense why they decided to have two different formats I think it could be both good and bad.

    I also like most of the new buttons and joysticks and stuff especially the placement of the vertical AF button. I’m still not too sure about the departure from the CSM AF switch for the D7000 AF switch, but I haven’t used the D7000 that much to really adapt to the system. I also noticed they moved the metering mode switch.

    Personally I can see Nikon releasing a D4s in two years that will have a higher base ISO, similar to the Canon 1D-X but I think the biggest thing they could do in the next revision of the flagship camera would be the inclusion of two XQD card slots once XQD has matured a little.

    But in the end I think Nikon did a really good job with the advancement on the video in this camera, as well as making some good decisions to improve the ergonomics such as back-lighting of the buttons and more ergonomical vertical shooting. However, I believe that whatever “problems” people have with this camera verses the D3s (mainly the 1 CF and 1 XQD) will be addressed in the minor revision of the D4 (D4s I am assuming)

    But I can’t afford just yet. And I’m happy enough with the D7000 that I’ve only had for ~7 months and still don’t have down completely.

    In all honesty, the D4 is way too much camera for me, and too big to take sneaky street shots with. The first is a short-term issue. The second is (at present) a non-issue since I mostly shoot stuff that knows it’s being shot or is completely static and unfeeling (and cats, who may or may not have any idea what’s going on). Then again, Nikon didn’t have people like me in mind when they came up with this camera, that’s why there’s the D7000 (and other consumer models).

    I love nikon, i do, I always have, even when last month I sold all my nikon gear to buy new canon gear. I do food photography and a ton of videography now, and I just coudn’t stay with nikon because they were so behind in video. even the d800, while a dream camera i’m sure, was so out of my budget and only had minimul improvements towards being like a 7D.

    This is a great camera i’m sure, and I will always be a nikon fanboy, even though I coudn’t continue to succed using their cameras professionally for my company.

    (p.s., i’ve been sking and shooting for 12 hours straigt, I can barely read this little font so my spelling is the last of m concer…zzzzz zzzzz)

    meh.. let me know when the real news happens. I was hoping for maintained Nikon dominance, instead they release this? Maybe they spent all their creative capital on the D3 generation.

    The high ISO is a nice touch, but only 1 stop beyond the D3s, and yet to be confirmed if its any better in low light. Though it is a marked improvement and one I glad to see, just wish it wasn’t the only significant one. Had they not released a D3s this would have been a huge improvement, but they kind of burst their own bubble on this one.

    Again, meh…

    As a videographer who mostly uses her Nikon D7000 for shooting video, I am so happy to see the incredible leaps Nikon has made with the video specs of this camera. Uncompressed 1080p video out is an AMAZING feature, plus the reports of less moire and rolling shutter, as well as a stereo mic/headphone jack, a Live View mode just for shooting video (with audio meters): these are HUGE features for any DSLR.

    Nikon has nothing to lose adding fantastic video shooting features to their DSLR product line, unlike Canon or Sony, they don’t have to fear they will cannibalize their other product line. Kudos to Nikon. I’ve been waiting for a full frame Nikon that shoots full 1080p video and I’m hoping Nikon stays on this road and adds similar capabilities to their D800 model. We’ll see shortly.

    Nikon used to roll out a new flagship camera every 8 years. Photographers spent those remaining 7 years, 364 days trying to make great images that mattered. Images that inspired. Images that moved people. Images that made a difference. They spent time to perfect their vision, their craft.

    Think about the images before auto ANYTHING that changed the way we see our world, the ones that kick you square in the chest and suck the all air out of the room, the ones that are so powerful you can’t stop looking or have to look away, the ones you have to wait a minute or a day or a week to formulate a response.

    Now we have a new tool that has more computing power than the space shuttle, that gives the operator more control over the process and the final product than ever, that lets us capture still and motion pictures in unbelievable detail, that can see in the dark, move faster than ever, auto anything you want and it isn’t enough?

    Louis C.K. has it right. Everything is amazing and nobodys [sic] happy.

    I am reminded of veteran photographer Bill Hatcher’s advice on equipment given to a room of photojournalism students. “It doesn’t matter. Get what you need to get your images in front of an editor.” If you earn a living behind the lens and this tool isn’t enough for you, find one that is and don’t look back. If this is the tool for you, please, push that visual envelope as far as it will go. Show us the world as we’ve never been able to see it before. Find the edge and try to break it. 1000 miles an hour with your hair on fire. For the rest of us, our time and money would better be spent refining the craft and our own vision until our current tool is the only thing holding us back.

    Bravo to Nikon on this most wonderful tool. A challenge to the users do something with it (or whatever we happen to have) that truly matters.

    The ISO range is quite killer, can’t wait to see test shots at 204800 ISO. Maybe a bit to ask, but I expected Nikon to dive into higher fps for video, like 48 or 60. Canon has been at it for a while now, and doing slow motion video with my Nikon lenses would give it this such nice and professional touch.

    Overall this seems like a very nice cam with good performance upgrades, at par with past announcements.

    The D4 seems like a reasonable upgrade of the D3s (evolution not revolution) and is fortunately priced that way. Now we have the D4 for speed or video and the D3x for resolution. There are some nifty features in connectivity and yes I wish I had the D4 illuminated buttons in my D3x. Seems to me like end of the evolutionary road however for the FX format DSLR – we have the D4 for moving subjects and the D3x for stationary subjects so what else is really needed in a pro DSLR? The step from the previous D3 generation is nice but a small step which to me also points to the fact that this line is reaching maturity. From here the serious amateur or pro can go to medium format digital and/or to mirrorless cameras (such as the APS-C sized Fuji X100) or better yet an interchangeable lens mirrorless APS-C camera such as the new Sony NEX-7; What I would love to see is an full frame sensor, interchangeable lens mirrorless camera optimized for fast prime lenses (manual or autofocus) with a really good EVF and focus assist. That would be a great second camera to either the DSLR or the medium format and therefore attractive to a wide audience of “serious” photographers.

    Nikon’s release of the D4 comes at an interesting time. The trouble they’ve had in Japan and Thailand has to be hurting them. Maybe they are hoping this will boost their sales and keep them running strong. I personally won’t be picking up of these any time soon.

    Recently I’ve been shooting more and more video on DSLR and while I’m a Nikon guy, I keep looking to Canon. I was really hoping Nikon would come out with something that had a huge sensor (for low light) that did ~20MP and had the option to shoot 1080p at 30fps with 60fps option at 720p.

    My latest purchase was a D7000 for the video and I love it. My main complaint is that I can only shoot 24fps at 1080p and have to drop to 720p to get 30fps. Thankfully I don’t shoot anything for broadcast so it’s not a huge issue. The other issue I have with the D7000 is that I’m only able to shoot 3 bracketed photos.

    I personally don’t see any point to upgrading my arsenal with a D4.

    Great looking spec for me. As many have said evolution rather than evolution but i think thats all you can expect when current cameras are so good. Biggest features for my work are lower noise (supposedly) and love the ethernet socket and in camera IPTC capabilities. What I hate though is the prices are getting just ridiculous. Its launching at several hundred £ more than the D3s did. Nikon and Canon seem to adapt an attitude that better camera = charge more, whereas other electronics manufactures accept technology moves on and as it does the top line products stay at a similar price level. Its gross!

    I guess for a high end commercial photographer £4800 in UK (=7500$ at todays conversion) is nothing (and for the rich amateurs who convince themselves they need a pro body) but lets face it, this cameras primary market should be news and sports shooters and other than your massive agencies, we can’t afford a 5 grand (UK) camera….. especially when most have at least two bodies. I fear we’re being asked to pay a lot for video capabilities none of us use. I can’t shoot video at most the events i cover. Im not allowed. They should offer a stills only version for at least a grand less.

    I’m not really impressed. The D3 was wow. The D3s, was even more wow,. The D4, in may ways it feels more the like D3ss than a D4, and reeks of having marketing pushing for sellable numbers.

    On the up side:
    * AF is better. Finally there’s a Nikon body that will AF at f/8 guaranteed. Better yet, they out did Canon’s old F/8 AF system and actually gave you more than one point.
    * There’s a second AF point selection stick, the lack of one on the predecessors is utterly brain dead, and makes for horrible portrait usability.

    On the down side:
    * The base ISO range is not really wider than it was in the D3s, sure there’s ISO 100 now, but ISO 12,800 is the last real ISO; given than ISO 204K is H4 how useable is it really going to be. Never mind, H4 means you’re giving up 4 stops of DR due the expanded ISO manipulations, how good is the DR at ISO 12800 going to be that 4 stops less is acceptable photographically and not just a bullet point for the box.
    * The new battery is baffling. Why? The EN-EL4a is only slightly smaller, and since we’re really talking about battery packs here, there’s no reason that they cant upgrade the Li-Ion cells and charge controller while still presenting the same 11.1V interface to the camera, thus retaining backwards compatibility (at least with the cameras). Change the guts, keep the interface, save the photographers from having to have 2 kinds of chargers, and carry 2 kinds of virtually identical looking batteries.
    * The price of this stuff is driving me nuts. I’m not made out of gold, maybe Chase is, but they (Canon, Nikon, etc.) keep ramping up the costs of the cameras generation over generation now. Possibly what’s even more galling is the apparent attitude that giving us more for the money is impossible or something—I’ve seen way to many comments defending the lack of real innovation as something that would make the camera too expensive.

      If you shoot high ISO with better quality than it’s predecessor… than that is improvement, and no reason go higher. The number still the same but the quality improved much, that’s more important. I think nikon gives you reality than just marketing hype about the ISO range.

      Price is always high when new technology comes out. Improvement and their effort to produce better and better camera is a long story R&D and of course ultimately very costly. Don’t think even hardware that inside also need software known as firmware to work.

      That’s why they create different classes on the camera market, so if someone just can’t afford the latest tech, just go lower.. that’s easy. Battle between brands is always good for customers :D…

    I am a complete and utter gear whore. I’ve got the D3x and the D3s along with some Phase One gear and each camera has it’s own duty. When I saw the announcement this morning I will admit to some drooling. Then I read the specs. It is a beautiful piece of gear. However it is extremely unlikely I’ll be getting one anytime soon. There is simply far too much overlap in what I am completely happy with in my current Nikon arsenal.

    I was actually much more excited about the new 85mm. Did I just say that?

    If Nikon wants to blow the doors off Canon, they would make the D4x a 20-25megapixel 16bit (stills), 120fps HD camera that can shoot 8 frames a second with a usable ISO up to 4000. THAT is the perfect camera. I’d buy 3 of those.

    I’m quite impressed with the data available so far. The fact that the MP count went up “only” to 16.2, speaks, IMO, about clarity of purpose and a sort of honesty on behalf of Nikon. It really seems the D4 is the result of a quest to come up with a tool which provides the best possible balance between its components, aiming at what’s most important to any serious shooter, performance and image quality, while resisting the marketing pressure to offer a huge MP count no matter what. It should be kept in mind that Nikon’s flagship model has always been more focused towards high performance in action and difficult lighting and weather conditions. There’ll always be other models better suited for other types of photography (like studio or landscape) with much higher MP counts and so on (wait for the d800 or a D4x), different cameras for different purposes. Some of the tech specs provided for the D4 may not look as impressive (though quite a few of them are) on paper to some people out there, but it’s the way this specs interact to get a great image that’s important. I prefer to read professional opinions from respected shooters who’ve laid their hands on it (and sure am looking forward to your insight when the time comes Chase) than to make quick uninformed judgements based on isolated data bits alone. If Mc Nally is impressed with what the D4 is able to pump out (and he most certainly appears to be) then I think I can also expect to be a bit impressed.

    What I really want to know is the dynamic range. I’m wondering if the camera has the modern 14-stop dynamic range that most of the video cameras do now days. It’s too bad that they haven’t hopped on the raw video output solution. It would be good to know if the HDMI output is 8-bit or 10-bit. 10-bit would kick Canon’s 1DX to the curb.

    I love it, I just don’t know if I truly need it though. I have an armada of DSLRs here, all capable, There is the dual format card problem, but I could learn to live with that. Already found one whiner kvetching about having to buy a new spare battery. Which of course is ridiculous considering the buy in price of the camera.

    Well, I have never seen nor used one yet, but it’s new, it’s Nikon, and it’s a real pro camera. Not prosumer, or god-forbid, consumer level. Not sure if it has enough megapix, but it has some other cool stuff which will finally allow my innate talent, which has so far be held back by my camera, to surface and shine. This alone nearly blows me out of the water. The D4x, which is sure to follow, will for sure allow me to become a photographic legend known world-wide, and not just among photography fans. Fine Art Footsie Fotos—the next HCB.

    And look at the size of that beauty. Slap a 500mm on that and imagine the looks I’ll get.

    Looks great based on the specs, but I’m not a big fan of dual-system memory card slots. I don’t want to be running around with two different card systems all the time, and if one fails, I want to be able to use the other as a backup.

    The improvements to the video function are fantastic, that should definitely give the folks a Canon some major headaches. Great to have Nikon back in the game. I hope the video function has an option to output in 10-bit in something similar to cinestyle or S-log via HDMI so we can make the most of the improved picture quality. For the future, arbitrary frame rates (eg. something like, say, 49 fps) and speedramps would be really great for more controlled slow motion, as well as the option to shoot in full 1080p even at higher frame rates like 60p.

    Another problem, although this is not really D4-related, is the fact that many of the new lenses don’t have distance/DOF markings on them anymore, and no aperture rings. Setting a lens to hyperfocal distance now requires a DOF calculator iPhone app, that’s just ridiculous, clumsy and time consuming. Hard stops would be very useful for filming without a specialized DSLR follow focus. And options to switch between different focus ring resistances for AF and MF so that they react like the old MF lenses when switched to MF mode would make life much easier and precise.

    MF in general is a major problem with DSLRs, I often wish the new cameras still came with split screen viewfinder. I shoot a lot in extremely low light situations where at times the AF is bound to fail or get unreliable/slow at some point (no matter how good and improved it is), and in those situations manual focus is the only viable way to go, but the newer lenses/cameras make precise focusing extremely challenging. That dot indicator in the viewfinder is just not good enough and only works in situation where the AF would work fine anyway. And some lenses, like the older Nikon ones or even the current Zeiss ones don’t even have AF in the first place.

    Built-in support for DNG would also be very much appreciated. Not only are the files smaller, thus reducing storage price, DNG conversion also slows down my ingest process quite a bit. DNG is a great, open, vendor-independent standard for RAW files, I’d love Nikon to respect and support that. Pentax does for example.

    Other than that, the D4 looks like a fantastic product, Nikon definitely still knows how to make great cameras.

    I’ve been wanting to make the switch to full frame for awhile now. I’ve been shooting with a d7000 and love it for its light and compact nature. After hearing the rumors about the d800 and d4 I obviously got excited as I envisioned one of these cameras will work for me. I tend to shoot climbing/adventure photography and so a probably my two biggest factors in a camera are size/weight and ISO performance. I saw some pics of d4 ISO range on a romanian blog the other day and was really impressed, but am wary about hauling around a 4+pound rig (lenses included). The d800 rumored specs worry me a little too. Why would I want my “studio” camera to have a smaller more portable body? In my opinion the d800 should be focused on fast low noise performance, not huge MP output. I’ll be waiting (anxiously) to see how the d800 pans out. Im hoping for a 5d Mark II killer. That being said if the D4 weighed a little less I would be all over it. Video looks fantastic too. I believe Corey Rich and a recent short film shot on the D4. Impressive stuff! In summary though: fast/LIGHT/lownoise/1080p @ 60fps/bombproof/16-20MP = dream camera

    For me the d4 looks like an amazing beast and OFC I’d love one. Now the specs are here, it’s actually a more attractive option the the fabled d800 I’m waiting for. I’m a wedding and landscape shooter and tbh I would rather have the d4 sensor for its low light capability than 36mp that seems to be the accepted size of overdue d800. I appreciate it’ll be great to shoot 36mp on a tripod but for lowlight wedding stuff, I can’t help thinking the extra pixels are going to create a lot of noise at 800 and above.

    The network port is a good touch, something I’ve read the sports shooters asking for directly in relation to the Olympics this year. What would be ace will be it the new wt4 will allow peer to peer networking, rather than having to dial in via the web.

    Overall it’s a winner an if the video and noise reduction can excel above the 5dmk2, I thinks its going to be a winner. Its the camera I wanted the d800 to be. :o(

    The Battery life is a HUGE drawback. Its so unlike Nikon too, to make something which is not backward compatible. The battery and the dual type card slots are the biggest let down for me, which is so weird because they had nailed it perfectly with the D3 cameras.
    Having said that, I will buy the camera as an upgrade from my D3 and D3s (I shall keep this one for a backup).

    A couple years ago I made the switch from Canon to Nikon, ending up with a couple D700’s for my wedding photography, and honestly love them. I’ve been toying with adding video to my services, and although this would add the solution to that, its definitely not in the price point I’d have in mind. Yes, I want great image output, and yes I want a sturdy body, but I’m not that desperate to add video yet when I’m still so passionate about stills. Honestly, I’ll be passing up on this camera, and possibly on the D800 or maybe not, but I think my next big purchase will be going towards digital medium format as I’d like to expand my fine art portrait capabilities and also commercial applications of a much larger, more detailed image that I think only that kind of camera can take. Either way, sounds like a great rig, just not for me. This is a camera for the Joe McNallys out there.

    Unlike a lot of folks I’m assuming are reading this, I came to photos via video rather than the other way around. That being said, I like having a single camera for stills and video for corporate and doco work. I also do a bit on the narrative side. What excites me about this camera are some of the little things that make a big difference. Having manual audio adjustments AND and headphone output is huge. Dual audio is a pain when you’re doing a single run and gun. t makes me really nervous to not be able to have a confidence monitor if I’m going straight into the camera with something like a Rode Videomic (Canon are you listening? Apparently not…).

    Other things like having good low light sensitivity is a big deal along with being able to have a clean output via HDMI. I also like the fact that I can choose to crop the sensor without losing resolution if I need more control on depth of field. Being able to use Nikon glass is also a plus in my book. I’m glad about the longer recording times, not a perfect solution but better than the 12 minute Canon limit.

    Another really interesting feature is being able to both control and monitor remotely via http. Being able to use a MacBook or iPad as a directors monitor is a real problem solver. From a stills perspective, I have no doubts this camera will be better than I am but will give me something to grow into as my skills as a photog improve. As far as the new data cards are concerned, if they allow for faster download of movie files, then that will be be a real benefit on set or location.

    What remains to be scene is how good the native codec is, how the sensor handles moire and how well the uncompressed video will hold up to color correction. Overall, given the current landscape of cameras, I think this could be a really cost effective tool moving forward.

    Wow, this looks to be a really incredible update that refines on features that made the D3s such a great camera and really improves on some of the features that were lacking…especially video. I do wish that Nikon would provide some real innovation and develop a shutter that can have a max sync speed greater than 1/250 sec…(and I am not talking about the gimmicky way of doing it like Nikon is doing it with their strobes by firing them multiple times while the shutter is open)…I want real sync at speeds that will allow large apertures in broad daylight with full power flash.

    with the rumors of the D800 being a hi megapixel camera… what will Nikon have as their “baby d4″? (much the way the d700 was to the D3.) Why not make the D300 replacement full frame and have spin off technology from the D4? this would place the D7000 as the top crop sensor and give Nikon 3 FF bodies in different price points….

    As an event photographer I am REALLY excited about this camera. For me it means less on camera flash – more ambient. The high ISO is far more important to me than the pixel count. Yes, I accept I am paying a lot of money for the extra video functions that will never be used… but my job is to capture the natural atmosphere of the evening – this camera will get me 6 steps closer than my current D3.

    Great product, no questions! 16MP is perfect, looking forward to see the ISO-performance (as I am wedding photographer, I need each and every ISO ;-)
    What I do not understand:
    1.) why different (not as good as D3s) batteries? Just to earn more money with batteries and charger (both prices up by 50%!).
    2.) why did they go for that strange AF-mode switch? this makes me slower on location!
    3.) XQD? Good choice, maybe – but 1 QXD and 1 CF? Why not both? Now I need different cards and 2 readers?!
    4.) is it true that AF-D is no longer supported? Seen a hint on the last page of the brochure, that only lenses with included motor are supported

    Now maybe the price of the D3x will fall and I’ll get one of those. Sure it looks like a a great new camera but I’m not thrilled with the addition of video. This is one of those features that I feel everyone is adding because the other guy did. I don’t do video work. I’m a photographer so please stay focused (no pun intended) on the task at hand and make a better camera for photos and leave video to the video cameras. Just my 2 cents worth. Hope everyone has a terrific and productive new year.

    Is the HDMI out Progressive or Interlaced? In the UK press release it says 8bit 4:2:2 “1080i” (interlaced). I really hope this is a typo and the clean HDMI out is PROGRESSIVE.

    If that were the case it would make it the most revolutionary feature and the reason fo me to switch from Canon and forget the 1DX.

    With a clean 1080p HDMI, the D4 becomes the perfect DSLR/Cine camera. An improved D3s on the photo front plus, on the cine side, the ability to plug into a SoundDevices PIX240 and solve the biggest DSLR issues (moire aside): bad codecs, lack of 48v and good mic pres and no more AUDIO SYNC hell.

    The fact that it can also turn a 70-200 into a 160-540mm zoom in video mode, is the icing on the cake.

    D4+ 14-24+ 24-70+ 70-200+ Zeiss ZF 35,50,85+ PIX240+ Schoeps Mics+ MBP= ALL YOU NEED for Pro Photo/Video, and it ALL fits in a single rucksack!!

    Why $6,000.00? Because they can. I though the price of tech is supposed to come down as it gets better. Apple computers keep getting better and better but the price is about the same as it was many years ago. How often does anyone really use ISO rating in the tens of thousands or higher? Not often I bet? If Nikon can put in an ethernet port why can’t they build in Wi-Fi instead of making us buy another piece of equipment? Because then we have to buy another piece of equipment. Why does the D4 need a different battery from the D3? Because then we have to buy new batteries.

    Instead of just more megapixels and higher ISO speeds when is Nikon going to make a flash/strobe with a removable rechargeable battery? I am really tired of buying loads and loads of AA batteries for my SB-900s. If Nikon can make a battery that will power a D3s for over 2,000 shots they should be abl to be make a flash/storbe that puts out 100 to 200 full power flashes on a rechargeable removable battery.

    The camera looks great, but the charger is the pits. It’s WAY too big for traveling with and if it’s anything like the charger for the EN-EL4’s then it’ll feel like there’s nothing inside. What a waste of space. And what’s worse about the charger is that even though there are two spots for batteries, it only charges one at a time. What a double waste of space.

    Here are some things that I think may set this camera apart from other cameras capable both still AND motion capture. Some can be found on other current and future cameras, but I’m unaware of any other that has most of the following features in one package:

    Better output–while it seems that the internal codec may in fact be a step in the right direction itself, judging by the cleanliness of the release film “WHY” on Vimeo, likely the uncompressed 422 out from the hdmi port will be a large step for motion acquisition on a dslr platform. As for the concern about 1080i, I believe all hdmi output from cameras, such as the F3 and FS100 begin as interlaced, and it is the job of the recorder to pull the 24p out of the signal. Correct me if I’m wrong here…

    Better sound–the camera features full manual control, that can be monitored and adjusted while recording, with and without HEADPHONES. This is something that many of us forget or have never experienced, but can prove vital to acquiring usable sound on camera.

    Multiple frame rates on a full frame sensor–no longer do we need to switch over to our 7d to shoot slow motion and go as wide as possible. Now we can shoot all of our frame rates on the same, full frame body, and presumably reap the benefits in terms of focal length and Iso performance. Huge time saver and quality bump.

    Crop modes–if well implimented, my 24-70 that was used a lot of the time could be even more capable, effectively becoming a 24-190mm. That could be insane! There has been talk that these crop modes will actually look better do to the fact that they decrease the line skipping involved and thus avoid many of the issues associated with the process. While the DX crop will likely be in that sweet spot of a 35mm lens, the 2.7x crop may be pushing some glass in terms of sharpness. Well see.

    Longer record time–many will find themselves in certain situations where 10-12 min of nonstop record time isnt sufficient. The D4 boasts a 30 min record time, which I imagine should satisfy the majority of users.

    Focus confirmation mid shot–if I’m reading this right, that would be legit.

    Monitoring both on camera and on hdmi monitor–could be convenient, especially if you can have your shooting info displayed on the camera and clean picture on the monitor.

    In camera timelapse–the camera can take your stills and create a 1080p file in camera. Should be a convenient way to produce timelapses quickly for certain projects, without the whole QuickTime or after effects workflow.

    Reduced moire and aliasing–while likely still present to some degree, the videos released so far look very clean in this regard compared to current slr’s and even some video cameras. Excited to see where it’s at.

    Reduced rolling shutter–Nikon boasts a faster scan rate of the sensor for less jello. Looks good in the videos but we will see.

    Ethernet–faster data offload and potentially a plethora of cool options here.

    Wireless control–using the optional dongle, looks like we cause our iPads and iPhones for a lot of different remote possibilities. Could be cool!

    And they are going to be the 1dx to market!

    And of course, all of this comes in a compact, durable and weather sealed package, that is supposed to be a full stop better in low light than the current king (the d3s) and is ready to take what will likely be the finest photos we have been able to acquire sub 10k. Add that to the fact that it’s ready to accept some of the finest glass on the planet (glass that many of us much prefer to Canon lenses and thus have been reluctant to let go of for years, despite shooting our video work with the 5d and 7d) and I think it might turn out to be the best camera ever made for a multidisciplinary shooter.

    So I want to throw out my concern for the near future of me as a nikon shooter. Some if this will be based on rumor ville and some speculation. First I am an advanced amateur and am starting to shoot more paid work. So I am testing out the waters of professional photography. I shoot a nikon d7000 and love it. But I seriously want a full frame camera. I am too poor to make a switch to canon. So Nikon all the way. I don’t have the budget for a top end fx (nikon full frame) d3s or d3x so that leaves the d700. this has been out for many years now and shooters love it. I so want one of course. But in looking for any used d700’s the average find is that the only ones available are older used pro ones with a ton of shutter actuations. pros keep as a backup or people like me aren’t selling. If I bought one I would plan on using it for a few years so I don’t want that old of one. So I have been eagerly weighting the arrival of the new fx line.

    The d4 is now official and by stats it is a replacement for the d3s. it is geared towards the wedding/sports/news shooters. A low light machine gun really. I would love this but can’t afford $6k. The d800 will be next. now this is still rumor but it is obviously going to happen. probably in feb at the big show. if leaks are accurate, and they have been so far. it will be a strange d700 replacement in my eyes. from 12 to 36 mpxl. the new great sensor and well performing low noise high iso will be comparable to the d700 and it should be a smaller body like the d700. but up to $4k from $2.5K that is steep. and a lower fps at only 4 down from 6. this looks more like a studio and landscape camera. more like the d3x, but they wanted $8k for that. so that leaves me to believe there may be a d4x to boost the mpxl count that is needed for that user and to jump to that higher price point. And to have 2 full size fx cameras. if they don’t make the d4x then they lost an entry level fx, seams odd.

    Either way, if the d800 specs hold true. you already have a great pair in the d800 and the d4. one wedding shooters dream in the d4 and one studio shooters dream in the d800. but both will be above 4 grand. leaving no entry level fx camera like the 2.5 grand d700. That sucks for me any many more people. I shoot a little of everything right no. so I don’t want or need 36 mpxl, and 4 fps is too slow for sports. The 5d mk 2 is the perfect midlevel full frame camera, and I want a nikon that compares. Good mpxl, fps, video and price. I’d love the d700 but many that have them want something newer to allow for better video fun. or simply something newer.

    with a possible bottom of $4 grand I can’t afford either the d800 or the d4. and if the d4x doesn’t happen then nikon lost the entry level fx. (on a side note I think the d700 and the d7000 completely make the d300s obsolete and I think nikon knows it) so I hope that they make a d400 that is a 20 mpxl, 7 fps, quality video dream for under $3k. They need a camera at that price to allow people to step into a full frame.

    So what are your thoughts on this. I would love to hear them. What do you d700 shooters think. Are you looking for a new camera now after a few years of shooting them or are in still in love with them?

    Edward Weston said that in 1930, but it is even more true today. With a new “improved” camera released every few months, today’s photographers are bombarded with a plethora of choices in sensor formats, mega-pixels and a multitude of other “improvements”. Photographic equipment manufacturers are in business to sell photographic equipment, but it is up to the individual photographer to buy judiciously. Both Weston and Ansel Adams were strong proponents of mastering the “craft” of photography. Only by understanding and mastering the function of the machinery of photography can one move beyond fumbling with cameras and concentrate on visualization and ultimately the creation of art.

    The camera is a tool, nothing more.

    I’m sure it will be an awesome camera. If I was shooting more music gigs, I’d go for it. The only thing I don’t like is having two kinds of cards. If the new format is the future, Nikon should have just dumped CF – that’s what Apple would do!

    But, for me, based on the rumoured specs, the possible D800 is more attractive – smaller size and higher resolution (especially if there is no AA filter). Most of the time I don’t shoot a lot of frames and as a landscape/portrait guy, the D800 seems like it might be a better fit.

    This mean old batteries, chargers from D3 series will no longer usable if I upgrade to D4. The camera seems to make a video person happier, I am not too crazy about that option. What would Nikon upgrade if they make D4s? more video features? I am a long time happy shooter with D3 and thinking of moving towards medium format instead. We will see what D800 spec will be.

    Seems about perfect from what I’ve seen, except the # 1 thing I was looking forward to was greater coverage of focus points rather than the concentration in the middle. And more points would have been nice too. Hope they can retrofit both slots to the new style. And while they’re at making the vertical feel more like horizontal, couldn’t they improve on the difference between the grips themselves?

    Okay, before I go very far, I have a D4 on pre-order. I’ve been fighting with myself on whether to buy one of the remaining D3S’s and use the extra money for the accessories that have to be had to effectively use any new body. I’ve been waiting for my 1st full frame body, to see what comes out of Nikon’s bag of tricks. I hope they announce the D700/D3X replacement before the D4 arrives! The D4 doesn’t sound like a huge upgrade over the D3S for the still photographer. Yes, the extra resolution is welcome, but other than a few niceities, I can’t say this is worth the US$800 extra cost. I have heard no hands user give a definitive statement that is unarguable saying this raises the bar, in ISO performance, in focus performance, or image quality. This could have been a better announcement.

    TBH I think it will depend on a couple of performance factors : Focusing and High ISO Noise.

    If those are spot on – then it’s a great move since 12Mpx of the D3s is a bit low for some.

    True it may loose out a bit to the D1X on Mpx and FPS – but not by much.
    They’re close enough for real-world performance to be more important over technical spec.

    i think its a great addition to the FX lineup. but it’s just a tweaked D3s, its pretty much everything we hoped the D3s would be.
    i’ll give this a pass. my D3s and D700 combo work fine for me.

    was waiting for D800 so I can start playing with video and keeping full frame sensor. I think I will just go with D4. I am not pro, but I like to be able to get better pictures of my cats.

    on a serious note, I love high ISO and not needing to use flash most of the time with indoor shots. hopefully whitebalance is better with D4, spend less time on computer too.

    All of the “normal” hype about the D4 is – well, normal. However, if you dig into the nuts-and-bolts about this camera you’ll probably see what is REALLY important. Nikon’s new baby raises the bar, not only for a “killer” focusing routine, but the ability to focus in very, very low light. They have added the ability to detect a face and keep the focus on that face – every as it moves around the frame – important? If you don’t see the HUGE advantage, then you don’t shoot weddings, portraits or fashion!     At some point you need to ask yourself if you are a photographer that shoots some associational video, or an aspiring photographer that is on the fence about moving into cinema. You can master both, no doubt; however, why on earth would you want to balance the two? I am sick of paying more for my GD camera bodies because you all demand that it makes your morning coffee, too. I mean really…how are you going to explain to a bride that you did not get any stills of her kiss, but you got an awesome video clip. What’s that…you were hired as a “photographer”. Good luck on pulling those stills though. Sorry sports-fans, even though ESPN (1 through a zillion), ABC, NBC, BBC, and every other XXC was covering the event with super HQ video, this jackass decided that a pesky HD Sony rig with a Canon Digi Super xs lens (likely worth more than his car, camera, and lens collection) was no match for the quality of his D4 with a 70-200 (hey it has VRII). Did I mention he was stream recording right from the HDMI out. So, instead of getting unique shots with super high shutter speeds, he had a video that was almost as good as what everyone that stayed home saw. I agree with everyone that thinks Nikon should have a better spread to their cross-type sensors. Maybe even add a card slot for a PW flash trigger, and provide the same thing on their flagship speed-lights. You know…useful stuff for a “photographer”.

    I currently shoot with the D700 with a variety and I almost upgraded to a D3s for my primary as I started getting into night photography. But I tell you what, I am so glad I held out, because THIS D4 is a BEAST!!!!

    Currently using D3/D3s, and tbh I’d rather spend the money on the D3x for extra resolution in studio and weddings, or maybe a MF..
    The D4 looks great, really great, but I find I’m quite content with the performance of the D3s for stills :)
    The change in layout, plus the changes in memory card slots and batteries, makes me think twice, Once you get into the habit of using several cameras with same layout, its gonna be rough (at least for me) to introduce a camera with a different button layout, and use it alongside the old ones, at least in situations where you use different cameras all the time, weddings etc..
    I’d rather wait for the D4s and replace all my SLRs in one go instead :)

    Great looking camera…it’s beefy, it’s got the specs most professionals would relate too…but like most, I will continue to hold out for something that really catches my eye specs & price wise…

    I’ve been shooting a D700 since 2009 & just bought a D7000 as a backup/video camera 3 months ago…pushing 55K clicks on the 700 and only 1500 clicks on the 7000…I’m good for another 3-4 years as far as I’m concerned…

    At this point, lenses, lighting accessories, and back up/storage is where my funds will go for the next couple of years unless both my cameras break.

    Currently have a D3s and would upgrade for the extra edge – but for two things. 1, the cost and 2, the complete and utter waste of time, effort etc that has gone into all that video stuff that I do not want or need. If I were going to shoot video I’d get a video camera. Why oh why do they do it. SLRs are wholly unsuited to it – just look at all the ludicrous kit you have to bolt on to make it even feasible. Sigh. OK three things: 3, why the silly card slots? ANyway maybe I’ll pick up a second D3s cheap :)

    a few months have passed since this post, camera is know out, some like it , some not so much, shot 20k images with it and although a few things are improved,mainly the ergonomics, the image quality is not s good, d3s has a sharp image with much better clarity, the d4 images are flat, probably to contain highlight better and improve the skin tone, WB is bizarre and needs a firmware upgrade to sort it im sure, many more things but wont bore you but the last point, should you replace your D3s, in a word NO you will regret it !!
