Chase, awesome behind the scenes. Are you still using LowePro for your backpacks while skiing? Or have you found a better pack for skiing/hiking that gives you room for gear, beacons, first aid etc? Have fun. It’s 55 and raining at my local hill and I’m more than jealous.

I pull off my gloves to shoot. Gotta maintain the feel of the camera.

Do you not worry about excessive consumption of our earth’s resources? I can see that your making a living for yourself and your family(and also hanging out of a helicopter taking shots and getting payed for would be an insane experience), but I understand that helicopters are incredibly inefficient. So therefore do think it’s ok to use up such huge amounts of energy and finite resources all for a couple of shots for some greedy capitalist company who just wants to post there name on any billboard, bus stop, and online advertisement spaces they can get there hands on? I respect you so much for your ability to get the position where you can be payed to do for what so many can only dream of doing, but should you not stand up for what is right and raise awareness among the companies of such issues they seem to ignore so well? Thanks, and sorry if I bored you and for the spelling and grammar mistakes..
i’m pretty sure artist jarvis has touched on this many a time–i don’t want to put words in his mouth so i wont. if you noticed, there was also a lot of skiing going on
So what? That doesn’t make it alright? And what is your point about the skiing, it makes no sense?

I was wondering though, why are you shooting the old 70-200 instead of the newer VR2?

I have both the new and the old 70-200. In truth, I prefer the 70-200 because i think it’s the right amount sensitive to focus… the new one is too sensitive IMHO (as in it focuses on falling snowflakes instead of the skier or snowboarder, whereas the last generation generally “finds” the subject better. That said, I use the newer one on occasion when these characteristics aren’t mission critical

Hey Chase! Looks like you’re having fun out there. Just a question about safety while shooting on the mountain and backcountry. I’m pretty new to shooting skiing and I try to be as careful as possible so I’m wondering what kind of precautions you take. There’s a photo with Chris shredding a line right in front of you and from what it looks like, it could turn out to be an awesome shot, but being in the middle of a slope like that seems like an avalanche trap. Do you ever find yourself jeopardizing your safety for the shot? I know I do, but I guess there’s always risk.
We are highly trained and travel with highly trained, local professional guides in most cases who are familiar with the terrain, the weather and avalanche cycles, etc. We exercise a lot of caution, despite the fact that mother nature is always in charge…
I cannot recommend strongly enough to stay OUT of those conditions if you lack experience, the proper equipment, and professional support.
I agree entirely. I’m always properly equipped and in the company of people with considerable experience. I’m just trying to gain as much knowledge as I can about shooting in these conditions. Tasks as simple as getting your camera out, dialling in settings, rigging a tripod become somewhat daunting when your’re on a 50degree slope or in sketchy terrain. I’m always prudent and asses shooting locations carefully.
As I’m sure you know, it’s an awesome thrill being out there and nothing compares with high fives at the end of a safe and productive day. Huge props to all the mountain photogs and filmmakers.
