Shepard Fairey Installs 100-foot Mural

Shepard Fairey has a new installation in London’s Pleasure Gardens. The 10-story mural is part of the London Pleasure Garden’s vision of emulating the 17th and 19th Century tradition of ‘communal spaces where people from all walks of life converged to listen to music, admire paintings, stroll, drink, flirt and immerse themselves in the culture.’ As the world’s attention turns to London for the 2012 Olympic Games (July 27-Aug 12) the longtime cultural capital of the world is hot showcase for these convergences of art, music, sport and media attention.

Head into your weekend with a quote from Fairey: “Art [and creativity] is really undervalued as a means of evolving culture. The more that [street art] is encouraged and there is a space that incubates it the better. As an artist, I always felt that museums and galleries were just too narrow a venue for my art – and art in general. The best art works like music, where music, when you really like it, you listen to the melody and the beat and then you pay attention to the lyrics and what the message is. It becomes a whole feeling and an idea bundled in one – visual art should work the same way.”

Powerful Wildfire Photos from Colorado

Summer-time wildfires are a fact of life in the dry climates of the Rocky Mountain state.

However, the conditions in Colorado this summer have brought record breaking wildfires. There are currently three major fires burning at once. The High Park, Waldo Canyon and Flagstaff fires have consumed, by some estimates, over 100,000 acres and close to 600 homes. Devastating.

The photography coming out of Colorado is powerful. From the captured emotions of people watching their homes burn, to tired firefighters, to apocalyptic-like skies – it is reminiscent of a war zone. The photography is honest and eery. Click through some of the tabs above to view some of the photos curated from the hundreds floating around on the internet.

Photos as Physical Art Objects — They’re Not Going Away

On Tuesday my post on backing up your digital data elicited hundreds of responses online. Many of you had a good quip on a time-tested methodology on how to back up your most treasured memories: print them.

What a concept – the photo as an object. As our culture ebbs and, largely FLOWS to just some bits and bytes on a hardrive or server somewhere, an actual physical photo unmistakably elevates in value because of scarcity. I love art as artifact – it’s so damn meta.

Tintypes (as you might guess based on the ‘tin’) are images that are exposed directly onto a stainless ferrotype plate. As physical as it gets. Priceless Data: Apple Faces Lawsuit for Lost Baby Photos

I’ve said it before, but it would be remiss not to mention it again: Back up your data.

Sad reminder of this again when I saw a recent story on PetaPixel about a guy who is taking Apple to court over lost baby photos, saying the failure of a storage device caused him to lose priceless memories. Perminder Tung used an Apple Time Capsule to back up his photos. The Canadian man claims that the device failed and that Apple subsequently told him that data was gone forever. Tung, a lawyer, says the data included the birth of his child and is now suing for $25,000 to compensate for the lost memories. Sad. But is this really Apple’s fault? Hell no. Drives fail. As photographers and filmmakers who depend on the retrieval of data not just for nostalgia – but for our living – we must accept this fact and take the necessary steps to avoid being int the position of the forlorn Mr. Tung.

This is one of the most important fundamentals–not just for professional photographers and filmmakers like us–but for anyone with valuable digital content that’s worth backing up. You can review my workflow video on how to back up your data here.

This may well be the most important behind-the-scenes video we’ve made, not because it’s fancy or sexy, but because it covers arguably the most essential information on a set of topics that every photo and video person should understand: workflow, storage and backup of your precious images. This video covers all the ins and outs, the theory and the details of our complete photo and video workflow from capture to archive and everything in between. It’s a tad dated, given some updates in technology, but the theories are crucial and sound. So whether you’re a seasoned pro, an aspiring amateur, or just starting out in photography or video we’ve worked hard to make this worth your time.

Weird Thoughts Inspire: Animal Photos in a Post-Apocalyptic Landscape

A friend of mine always has the same weird thought when visiting Las Vegas, “What would an alien make of this place in a totally abandoned state? Can you imagine the ruins of a slot machine with no context?” It’s these weird thoughts that can lead to your next piece of personal work. Mine usually come at 3am.

An example of some post-apocalyptic creativity is Richard Allenby-Pratt’s series Abandoned (which my friends at Flavorwire brought to my attention) where endangered animals are the only survivors in a barren landscape. No humans anywhere – but solitary peacocks, giraffes, rhinos and gazelles wander the urban ruins. Allenby-Pratt explains on his website, “This project imagines a future without people, where the relics of our unrealised ambitions are populated by some of the species we have, in the present day, come so close to exterminating.” Thought provoking statement and some equally stunning photos. Best Photo Locations: Detroit

If you’re primarily an on-location photographer or filmmaker, then you know how much value a great location can add to the shoot. This is the blog’s new series, Best Photo Locations, where I feature supercool locations around the world. Stuff I discover, stuff that others send me, places I’d love to shoot. Of course feel free to chime in, share, link, or otherwise contribute in your own way.

Detroit: Rich with economic and cultural history. The once thriving city was a manufacturing stronghold at the heart of America’s industrial power. The Motor City’s struggles have been well-documented. Today, left in the wake of the city’s fallen industry, there is a fertile landscape for incredible images. While definitely economically downtrodden, a visit in the past 24 hours has proven that there is grace, optimism and inspiration alive and well in the city and culture of Detroit. Indeed the architectural landscape has, as a local friend put it, “lost its connective tissue,” as a result of abandoned swaths of downtown; nonetheless, it’s impossible to spend time in Detroit and not feel the potential for renewal. Click through the images above to see some of photographer Sean Hemmerle’s project on Detroit: “Rust Belt.” Haunting, beautiful and sad, Hemmerle’s work shines a light on former architectural grandeur while commenting on the undeniable social decline of a legendary American city.

On a personal note, I experienced some great music thanks to some local friends. We caught some live jazz, the Mike Monford Trio, at Cliff Bells on Park Avenue. I found that there is still plenty of music, literally and figuratively, in Detroit.

Make a Declaration of Creativity

I just received a very inspiring email. I thought it was worth sharing. I’ve changed or left out some of the personal details to protect the privacy of the sender.

“Hey Chase,
It worked. Everything you said worked. I declared myself a photographer, got business cards, set up an LLC, pumped out shots and pimped them like mad. I DECIDED this is who I am, and it’s like the whole world conspired in my favor. The best part is that my Dad who always told me photography was a waste of time, now respects me and respects my art. My life has changed because you gave me the time of day. Thanks for everything!”

By declaring a commitment to your own creativity you can make big things happen. Simply by deciding, “I am a photographer,” “I am an artist,” “I am a writer,” and taking the action necessary (like making your business cards and forming an LLC) you can and will make make it happen. Whatever your it might be. These are massive mental shifts — and not easy to make by any means. But trust me, they will make all the difference. Just like the letter says, you might find that the ‘whole world’ will conspire to help you. When I hear these stories – they deeply inspire my own work. So thank YOU for the letter. And most of all, thank you for helping to make the world a more creative place.

Inspiring New York City Time Lapse: The Manhattan Project

I’m headed back to New York city this week. The city has a unique way of pushing photographers and filmmakers to be more creative. The constant pulse of visual inspiration is motivational. My own work has been given the occasional Big Apple boost – in fact, it was just one year ago that I wrapped up my Dasein: An Invitation to Hang installation at the Ace Hotel. The mini-doc and some of my conclusions on “An Experiment in Creative Living” in NYC, can be viewed here

Photographer/filmmaker Cameron Michael put out a time lapse of NYC that has been making the rounds the past couple of days (via PetaPixel and FStoppers). Cameron spent roughly 5 months on the project and carried 120 pounds of gear from location to location to capture the piece. It pokes around the entire city and highlights the gorgeous juxtaposition of activity that makes the city so incredible. Super cool homage to the city that never sleeps.

Friday Fun – The Lemon-Ginger Caipirinha

It’s summertime and the weekend is here. I had the good fortune of discovering this fresh Brazilian cocktail this week in Guaruja surrounded by old and new friends. I highly recommend you try it out. Have a great weekend.

3 small chopped seeded lemons or small oranges, limes, tangerines (no need to peel)
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated peeled ginger
3/4 cup lemon juice (or other citrus of choice – tangerine, lime, orange)
1 1/2 cup cachaça (Brazilian sugarcane liquor) or vodka

Divide lemons (or small oranges, tangerines or limes – we had lemon) among 6 tumblers. Add 2 teaspoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon grated peeled ginger to each glass. Crush the ingredients in the bottom of the glass with a muddler or handle of a wooden spoon. Top each drink with 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/4 cup cachaça (Brazilian sugarcane liquor) or vodka. Fill glasses with ice cubes, stir, and serve.
