    They certainly provoke emotion – my uncle and his family live in Colorado Springs and have yet to be evacuated. It worries me.

    Arizona has these too. We had a terrible one last year. Still I see people flinging cigarettes out of their windows. Another thing I don’t understand is why fireworks are even legal here. Talk about a stupid idea!

    I really feel for those people. What devastation! How terrible.

    I don’t have much hope for it any more, but maybe someday we’ll start to do something about global warming instead of letting disaster after disaster hit us. What will it take? (No, global warming doesn’t immediately cause fires. But high temperatures help, and the huge swathes of forests that have been killed by beetles—that now survive through the winters—burn easily.)

    The images of the fire are powerful. We’re in the standby evacuation area in Woodland Park. Many of our friends down in Colorado Springs are evacuated. When we gathered our valuables the first thing my wife packed was photo albums. I gathered my hard drives with all digital back ups. Interview after interview those evacuating mention photos as the first thing they packed. What you do as a photographer whether pro or amateur, what you do is priceless.

    These are great and helps bring awareness to what’s happening.

    I would hope that Boston.com does a Big Picture series on this event. Those serious are always filled with the most amazing photos.

    Sickening. I have a nauseous feeling in my gut, I can imagine the horrible sense of loss these people will be experiencing. Some may say it is only material things, but whatever the philosophy, people have worked really hard for themselves and their families and their homes and prized possessions have been lost.
