Great photos, too great to be done on the moon from my point of view. It’s almost impossible to get one cool clean shot with your camera on your chest, not to mention in space, almost no wieght, in a full suit, no way to touch the camera in a good and simple way. Great shots, but not from the moon.

Oh please………keep the conspiracy rubbish out of here, it’s an insult to Neil Armstrong.

Ok, that out of the way…….I’ll never get tired of looking at the moon pics. I do wish there were really hi-res versions available…..would love to print out some seriously large versions for my wall.

Wearing a large and stiff space suite would be an excellent stable platform for taking photographs (greatly reduced transmission of undesirable body movements) especially when the conditions are extremely bright so he can use a fast shutter speed. It was was also a modified camera for use with the suit (pretty stupid if they sent him up there with a standard camera) – 500EL – built in motor drive for advancing the film and probably a suitably designed remote release. Focusing would have been a problem so he was given a wide angle lens and with the bright conditions he could use a small aperture for greater depth-of-field. I suppose framing might of been hit or miss but using wide angel lens gives margin for error – just crop if necessary – it’s a large film size with, probably, a slow emulsion and a very sharp lens.

Typical – conspiracy theory born of ignorance

    • samy August 30, 2012 at 4:16 am #

I agree, it is all fake
They thought that there are should be a lot of dust, beacuse on earth we have it even in a vacum,
but check it with Curiosity photos – no dust, and the photo number 9, just pay attention to reflex
the person who takes photo you can not see, only shadow – and there is a person without space suit
and ther third person appears there (check the shadow of photografer lying in one direction and other´s
in other – a lot of mistakes – Photoshop was missing and the person who did it
could of study Rembrandt works at least – to learn about Light

Hey dummy! What the hell do you think that BIG WHITE THING is right in the middle of the reflected images? One Obamas Greek columns? Because of the curvature of the visor, it distorts the reflected images, you know, kinda like “Objects in mirror are closer then they apppear”.

    • Anonymous October 18, 2012 at 5:20 pm #

Completely agree. These pictures were NOT taken on the moon. They were created by the one and only Stanley Kubrick. Here on earth.

What’s the Worst Home Price Haircut You’ve Found?“Here’s a fun property: 42905 SE 177th St in North BendSold in August 2003 for $570,000, then sold for the innsae price of $725,000 in April 2007, only to get taken back by the bank in July 2010. Now listed for $410,000.”1. What’s up with the sudden popularity of phrases regarding debt and suffering that include the word “haircut.” 2. A “FUN”property? What exactly is “fun” about this situation. How is an inflated “boom-era” price anything other than merely predictable why is it “innsae?” Please explain. Surely this kind of price history won’t surprise anyone who reads this blog.Did you contact the owner(s) of this property to get their story /stories? If you did, I missed it. Here’s my experience with this kind of “fun.” During the process to sell our home for $95,000 less than we had paid for it about a year previously, no one in my family ever thought they were having “fun.”No one in my family was snickering or wanting to start a contest to see who could come up with the most misery and sadness and grief. There was only a quiet sense of purpose, to pay down the mortgage before the home was sold, and a sense of sadness and loss, then a sense of moving on. No one thought it was “fun” to have their home advertised on the internet and their privacy compromised.OK, go for it fellas. Talk about how stupid you just know people like myself are. Throw in a few statistics and charts and hyperlinks. Talk all about how people like my family have caused all kinds of problems in the housing market even if it isn’t really true.C’mon, give it your best shot. I want to hear some really mean stuff, some wonderful, snarky, repeatable witticisms. Maybe put me in an indefensible position, then laugh at me for exposing my soft stupid underbelly. Bonus points for finding spelling/grammatical posting errors you can pick on.Ho-ho-ho you are so darn erudite and cool!

  4. Trevor August 27, 2012 at 12:48 pm #

He did a fantastic job of the photo’s under what must have been difficult operating conditions. And although it hardly merits a response, Alex (and any other hoax theorists). There was a fierce cold war rivalry between the Americans and the Russians who were bitterly disappointed when they were beaten to the moon. Do you not think that had there been any credible suggestion of a hoax that the Russians would not have exposed it !?

    • Les August 27, 2012 at 1:32 pm #

NASA states that the astronauts took thousands of photos through these missions. They had many a dud photo too. But the astronauts were each given cameras to practice with on Earth well before each went on their successive missions. They were encouraged to use the cameras on family events and holidays etc. so that they’d know them like the back of their hand when using these on the moon.

In reality using for the most part rather wide angle lenses and affixed to the camera mount on the suits it’s not as hard as one may think to get rather good shots (from the hip so to speak) from these angles.

I have some cool books and National Geographic’s on the space missions and the photos published in these including those from the moon are simply stunning.

Hoax believers, NASA sent men to to Moon, the facts support this and you only look a fool for disregarding the facts.

      RIP Commander Armstrong.

please pro photos. look at the shadows. the light source is close by. that’s not the sun. the picture is a fake. i DO like it. great picture. not from the moon.

    • Matt August 27, 2012 at 6:45 pm #

The sun is a hard light source. The dirt/dust would have provided some diffusion. What on earth (or moon) are you talking about?

      • no moon August 27, 2012 at 7:07 pm #

shadows from the lander, man and foreground rock should all have the same direction and not 3 different ones. these shadows indicate a light source positioned fairly close to the scene. FORGET the hoax and conspiracy, i don’t care about that, I’m just analyzing the photo. the light source is not the sun. that’s all. could wide angle effect though. is 60mm wide angle on that Hasselblad?

        • Les August 27, 2012 at 10:49 pm #

          UGH!

The Moon isn’t like a billiard table. The undulation of the terrain will affect the look of shadows. But STOP AND THINK! If their was multiple light sources then we’d see multiple shadows of each object in frame. Never do you see multiple shadows off any object.

          • no moon August 28, 2012 at 12:56 am #

i never said multiple.i said one source closer than the sun

          • Les August 28, 2012 at 2:07 am #

HUH! Now you are thinking ONLY one light lit up the fake moon sound stage? It would have to be as big and bright as a sun.

No, now listen up ok? The SUN, the thing we wake up to each freaking day was the SOLE illuminating light source. The moon’s soil would act as a reflector in the exposures but that’s it.

We as humans went to the Moon, landed on it with men aboard 6 times. FER GOD SAKE SHOW THEM RESPECT!!!

    • some one out their August 27, 2012 at 7:23 pm #

my Great Aunt worked at a local Houston area custom photo lab. she had one of the astronaut’s personally bring a set of photos in. she hand printed and dodged the photos. please learn something about the old style photography before you open your mouth. these photos are great but only as good as the lab printing them. I was given one of her photos she made from the negs they are truely great works of art and not fakes.

  6. Jerard August 27, 2012 at 7:05 pm #

I found this piece by Mythbusters – and the subsequent pieces – to be very helpful in helping to address the lighting scenario on the moon. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wym04J_3Ls0

    • no moon August 27, 2012 at 7:16 pm #

awesome. i take it back then. i was wrong. but again, i don’t care about the hoax. just he image :) though, my personal humble opinion is that the images are too good to be true.

      • Les August 28, 2012 at 2:02 am #

        Why would you think such?

They shot with 70mm film in special Hassies. The cameras had only modest exposure control but negative film has wide exposure latitude. The cameras were mounted on attachments on the chest of the astronauts. It’s easy to get a good shooting from the hip style photography. That said NASA says the astronauts took lots of dud pictures too. Thousands of frames were shot from all Moon missions.

    • Max Nöthe August 28, 2012 at 1:21 am #

There are a lot of evidences for human presence on the moon!
The Apollo missions placed mirrors on the moon that can be used till today to measure the distance between erath and moon with a laser. With the right equiptment you can do it on your own:

You can view 125 of the 200 images Commander Armstrong shot during EVA from the infamous “Mag S” (Hasselblad TR 400227), the one he dropped while hoisting the collection bag up to Buzz Aldrin in the LM. http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/apollo/catalog/70mm/magazine/?40

A little known fact is that NASA photographer Terry Slezak became the first person in history to touch the surface of the moon with their bare hands. How? Slezak was charged with processing the film from the Apollo 11 mission and when he grabbed “Mag S”, the one Armstrong dropped on the surface, the residual dust got all over his hands. That earned him an immediate trip into quarantine with the rest of the Apollo 11 crew and a unique place in history.

That’s right, a PHOTOGRAPHER was the first person to touch the moon….

Very discouraging to find people who *should* understand basic optics and light behavior claiming that these photos “must be faked”.

  15. David October 18, 2012 at 6:58 pm #

I think its incredibly sad that in an article that both celebrates Armstrong, what he and Apollo crews did, and Chases focus on the incredible photo’s taken with extraordinary cameras … has been slammed by a sick conversation over the fake conspiracy, mostly by unfortunate people who were probably not even alive in those days.

Conspiracy theorists will always need fodder to ensure their non existent feelings of self-worth are kept from ever being healthy. The sound of their own voice, and this need to shock and disagree, bears more weight than simple acceptance of the truth. Theorists need not respond to this comment with supposed ‘inconsistencies’, as you will only be proving my point.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Elvis, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Munro and James Dean … did not shoot Kennedy and live together on a deserted island with Area 51 files, before moving to Atlantis. There … peace said. I would not be surprised Chase, if you decided to delete all related comments, or even turn off comments for this post. You have done a good thing, and these ‘people’ really do tarnish it, with their own agenda. Next they will be saying that Baumgardner jump was faked.

Great story and photos Chase, an important moment in history, and simply awesome photographic testament. Thanks for writing it, and reposting on FB today.

As considerably as I am aware, there is no independent spot around right here during the center of nowhere. But I make a quite great dried cherry and blue cheese pizza. Mostly I do think it is for the reason that I make the crust from scratch. (I much more or considerably less need to for the reason that my husband is latose intolerant as well as the commercial kinds all have milk. Luckily he can try to eat blue cheese.) I put on jarred sauce and then the cherries and then the cheese. The sweetness of your cherries goes nicely with all the saltiness in the cheesesort of like pineapple and ham.

It may be thoughtful to observe when blanket statements are made to cover everyone. For example, “The grenades thrown into open-air markets some years ago by some anti-government Hmong is an accusation?” … I do not know the exact details of that incident, and by nature suspect any made available by state agencies or Hmong representatives both with vested interests. The idea that opposition in any nation can do something wrong, immoral, violent and disruptive is valid, but dismissing, or appearing to dismiss, the multiple wrongs by the state that were doing beforehand and that followed is not the way to reason, either. The Palestine situation is a case in point, where Israeli interests and those supporting them deny any connection between the Middle East injustices and 9/11.Back further, the native American Indian failed in their fight for homeland security because they did not have the weapons and allies to protect their homeland.Democracies, as much as they exist, are born without exception with blood of patriots, usually following blood of ordinary men and women who have suffered persecution for sometimes decades or centuries.Reality is also reality. The state’s first objective in maintaining control over diverse populations (even those that only have different beliefs) is first and foremost to remain in power, and secondly to avoid embarrassing situations that shame state officials. This is the reality all of us live under, to one extent or another.
