and here’s the post from earlier this morning of footage from this little powerhouse.

Last night GoPro initiated the launch for the new GoPro camera. I’m intrigued. So I’m going to go join in the fun – I’m on the first flight to San Francisco in just a few hours. Stay tuned.

Here’s what we’re told so far:

_Tiny: Especially when you consider that it shoots 4K video at up to (a bit sluggish) 15fps. Drop the resolution to 2.7K, and it shoots 30fps. 1080p video can be captured at 60fps and 720p frame rate at 120fps. This is a lot of cinematic punch in a tiny body.

_Sexy: GoPro seems to have made some great design modifications for this camera. It looks solid but is lighter and smaller than the Hero2.

_Faster: the image processer is 2x as fast as the Hero2

_Pricing: the Black Edition is $399, the Silver is $299 and the White $199. Pre-orders started at 12:01AM PT (3:01AM ET).

[Stay tuned for updates once I have the chance to play with it.]

Definitely exciting news, and certainly something I’m sure you’ll find a use for, Chase! Excited to see :)

I’m pleased to see some design improvements – that’s something I thought contour did a better job at. I look forward to the results.

Awesome! One thing I wonder about though is whether or not it can capture decent stills. I’ve been looking for a still POV camera that allows for some control over exposure/focusing and RAW capture. Any suggestions (Chase?) are welcome!

Can’t wait to see the results. Would you please do some tests at night/ with low light? My only complaint with the Hero 2 was the huge quality deterioration when the sun set. Much appreciated!

Does it have WiFi connectivity with automatic link to cloud based sites (e.g. uploads to YouTube, iCloud) automatically as a private video? Capacity of the Memory? Type of Memory? Waterproof? Sorry didn’t look up the specs, but sounds really sweet.

i bwant to join the line of photographers…

  8. JRLEWIS October 17, 2012 at 8:57 am #

I had the first one and the hero2 now and the low light is poor – i wonder how much better the 3 will be. 120 720P sounds amazing.

For Sale: GoPro Hero2 used twice.

Design changes, damn, that means old box wont work.

I bet that 4k video would look pretty good after a run through After Effects warp stabilizer…

  12. dave laslett October 17, 2012 at 4:05 pm #

    wow 120fps that’s better than the D800

I was looking at a GP2 for time lapse purposes, but being limited to the ultra wide view broke the deal. Anyone know if GP3 stills, particularly time lapses, can use the wide or narrow POV, also?

Had a chance to use these new Hero3 cameras for a day during the making of the release video. I was blown away. One of the best parts was the ability to crop through and shoot stills/video not in a “fisheye” pov closer to a 35-40mm lens equiv. The resolution of this tiny beast is crazy!

Thank you for the response. I have found my solution for time lapse and a great video option for my limited needs.

LOVE the fact that they’ve added 1080p60 and 720p120 — better than the DSLR video. Oh, AND WiFi. AND remote control via iPhone. (Hello? Are you listening Nikon and Canon? Oh, I guess not.)

i’d get one if i didn’t have one at all, or if i only had the gopro1. seems like a great new design, but not worth the upgrade if you already have the gopro2. gopro is probably the 3rd best marketing company out there, after Nike and Apple– you’ll go nuts trying to keep up with their products. GoPro2 is awesome. only sucky part is low light. the 3 looks awesome, but stiff probably sucks in low light. i have several DSLRs for serious photography. what do you take pictures of or film with your GoPro? Exactly. Lets keep things in perspective

Will the old 3D sync cables work with the GP3? Or maybe they redesigned everything from the ground up and make ‘em smaller?

The 3D sync made my cameras act a little buggy at times but imagine shooting 3D with 2.7k video! would be just amazing!

Can’t wait to see the camera with my own eyes… Was looking at the sony actioncam two weeks ago, but those nasty thoughts of buying a sony cam are all gone. This camera is way better than anything I expected from GoPro.

    • CraigMT October 25, 2012 at 4:07 pm #

Wow, can’t wait to get my hands on one.
What are the actual dimensions of the camera? (without the clear enclosure)

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!| pure garcinia cambogia http://www.pure-garcinia-cambogia.org
