100-Foot Wave Shredded By Fearless Surfer Garrett McNamara

Back in December I did a post on How to Surf the World’s Biggest Wave about Garrett McNamara’s amazing feat in Nazare, Portugal. In May 2012 McNamara surfed a 78-foot monster into the record books and the video went viral. Some people might have kicked back and pursued some couch surfing after that type of achievement. But not McNamara. Just 2 days ago he did it again. And this wave was almost 3 stories bigger — topping 100-feet. The resulting imagery is surreal in scale and spectacular in effect.

I think the photo really makes this. It’s beautifully taken, and really makes you wish you were there to experience this event.

The video posted does not actually show the supposed 100ft wave. The actual wave didn’t really break which is causing some controversy about whether a wave that doesn’t break can claim the record.

Garrett, humble as ever, has not claimed the wave is 100ft and is not asking for any records at this stage. He just want’s to surf big surf (and sell movies presumably as many of the videos on the net are teasers for better quality footage).

having met garret and knowing a few of the surfers that surf with him. he is actually anything but humble, hes very rude and has a chip on his shoulder. Hes also not very respected from what i hear, he dangerously cut off Greg Long recently on a wave that sent Greg to the hospital and he also rides boards that have built in motors to help him get in the wave quicker like a jet ski

That’s interesting to hear from someone who’s met him. Maybe that is why he always seems to surf alone and never gets much support from other surfers.

I saw the Greg Long thing and although an accident Greg was pretty charitable to let him off the hook so easily.

Images like this make me appreciate how tiny we are on this planet we call home, and the raw power of mother nature that surrounds us. What an incredible photograph, Chase. The true scale of this event comes to bear when you spend some time checking out the great details in the picture that share some of the context.

given that im a fan of the comics i loved that this focussed more on the comics than the movie. i would have liked a little more time to read my choices before having to make them. i often found myself making the wrong choice due to not having time to read all my options. that said it was a great way to use up my spare 400 points and im now in for the duration
