I am an advocate of personal work. Finding time to create personal projects has been one of the most valuable experiences of my career as a visual artist. My guest on the next week’s episode of chasejarvisLIVE is Ian Ruhter. Ian’s commitment to his personal work has been turning heads. A professional snowboarder turned photographer he was at the top of his game as a staff photographer and commercial shooter for the most respected magazines and brands in the snowboarding world. Then, more than 2 years ago, he had a vision of a photo that had never been taken – and he needed to be the one to create it. In a moment he went “all in” and started his pursuit of a new, completely unique, creative experience. He spent all his savings and converted a box truck into a tintype camera and started traveling around the country in his camera taking wetplate processed tintype photos – some of the largest that have ever been created. How the World Learns – Julian Germain Captures Classrooms From Around the Globe

If you come around these parts often you know that I have a keen interest in education. The fact is, in order to find success in a creative career or otherwise, learning what’s most important and executing against it is critical. In short, if you want to kick-ass at your job, hobby, passion, life… you need to learn how to learn (see my homie Tim Ferriss’ creativeLIVE course from last week. Tim took us on whirlwind tour of some of the key concepts in his new book The 4-Hour Chef which officially launches and is available TODAY.)

As I watched Tim from the sidelines of our set at creativeLIVE – proud of this free learning channel – and wondering, on one hand how many countries were tuning in to our broadcast (somewhere north of 100)– but on the other hand, how many could not. How many people around the world were in a far different world than us… focused on the physical classroom out of necessity, opportunity, gratitude… I learned in physical classroom, as I’m sure most of you did too. We can all relate to those weird all-in-one desk/chair thing, the smell of chalk, the sound of a bell telling us that class is over — and it is a powerful and shared human experience.

It was in this vein that I recently stumbled across the work of Julian Germain and his Classroom Portraits series. Started in 2004, Classroom Portraits are photographs of physical classrooms full of students from all over the globe. Russia, Nigeria, Cuba, Taiwan — the man has covered some serious ground on this one. [Take a look at some of the classrooms visited in the gallery above.]

Germain’s images are many things, but more than anything for me, they remind me that the global education system is being re-imagined NOW, and will see a complete transformation in our lifetime. What will it look like it another 20 years? These portraits will become even more powerful. #Respect for Julian Germain and this impressive piece of work.

Be Bold, Be Different [chasejarvisLIVE re-watch with Snowboarding Legend Travis Rice]

You’ve heard me say it before – don’t sink all your effort into being incrementally better. Instead be DIFFERENT. Be BOLD.

This episode of chasejarvisLIVE was focused specifically on this simple idea. And my special guests for this episode epitomize this ‘different’ and ‘bold’ mantra as well as anyone I know. Like all of my guests, these guys aren’t ensconced in the “this is how it is” photo industry – they’re innovators from a parallel universe….

Yes, Travis Rice is the best snowboarder in the world. But what makes him the subject of this #cjLIVE is not really his skill. It’s that he is an innovator, a risk taker, a visionary the star of the most progressive action sports film ever made (The Art of Flight). He’s a bold and creative leader in his crowded and noisy industry.

Some take-aways from this show:
_be bold – as in snowboarding risk is a part of the game
_be different – build your own way down the mountain -as Travis did with SuperNatural)
_get used to hearing “no” when they say your idea is “crazy”… you’re probably on the right path
_protect what you believe in- know when to be the one saying “no”to opportunities that are not the right fit.
_life is long- the amount of things you can create, learn and share in a lifetime is massive.

Analogously, Chad Jackson hails from Brain Farm Digital Cinema. He and his partner Curt Morgan are the makers of the most innovative, high caliber and DIFFERENT action sports films in the world (eg. The Art of Flight). By using unique techniques and special cameras (like the phantom), leveraging relationships and their special vision, they have broken away from the old action sports film paradigm to set a new bar, a different bar.

Friday Beats – Fresh Espresso

Here’s another joint from the Capitol Hill Block Party episode of chasejarvisLIVE we hosted back in July. Fresh Espresso is the delightfully dope combo of P Smoov and Rik Rude. These Michigan natives have been bringing beats to Seattle with their many musical collaborations for years. Most notably the MCs have mixed it up with P Smoov’s other well-known Seattle group Mad Rad. On Fresh Espresso’s latest album, Bossalona, P Smoov makes the beats, raps, and sings. Rik Rude raps. Trent Moorman rips up the drums and Terry Radjaw is the DJ. This album has been getting great reviews. Here’s a quote from Seattle’s best curator of new music – KEXP.

“This is another smooth and smartly crafted set of hip hop incorporating elements of electro, jazz, R&B and other styles. It’s a fun yet substantial set with synth-driven tracks featuring a variety of funky beats and occasional horns and other instrumentation accompanying the duo’s colorful and sometimes poignant rhymes.” -Don Yates – KEXP

Smoov and Rude’s set on cjLIVE was full of irreverence, masterful tethered samples, witty lyrics and moved along with smooth beats. It was a pleasure having these guys on – and their continued collaborative and creative output in Seattle-based groups continues the enlightened tradition of “206″ musicians sharing their talents with each other.

Without a doubt, the audience is the beneficiary of this attitude of sharing. Call it musical transparency. Everyone wins.

New Music Dropping Today — MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS [video]

Last year we were fortunate enough to host some great friends on chasejarvisLIVE — perhaps the fastest rising hiphop act in the country — MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS. Today the Seattle duo independently released their latest work: “The Heist.” The effort brings artists like Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul to the table in a 15-song album. It is their first project since 2010′s re-release of their debut The VS. EP and it is AWESOME. And I’m not the only one who thinks so — they are in the midst of a world tour that has been selling out everywhere. [They will be in Seattle Friday at the WaMu Theater]

They joined me onstage to drop knowledge about staying true to one’s art, the evolution of creativity in a digital age, and more. Pitch Your Creative Vision [chasejarvisLIVE rewatch]

Last week I hosted author and pitch guru Oren Klaff on chasejarvisLIVE. Wow. I knew it was going to be good – but we had no idea that there would be such a huge reaction to Oren and the information he shared from his book Pitch Anything. The community has been talking about it all week. So here it is again for your viewing and eternal viewing pleasure. Oren is not only the purveyor of more than $500 Million (yeah- read that twice) in successful pitches in a variety of industries – he also happens to be hilarious. He and his book – and a simple framework of how to make YOU and YOUR WORK become “the prize” — has helped me perhaps more than any other book on “selling” AND I think he can help you too.

While we LOVE to focus on tapping into our “creative side” – take it from me, if you ever want to have a chance at earning a REAL LIVING with your creativity (or, hell, even making even a dime with your work) then being able to PITCH and SELL your work is essential. Don’t make me say that twice. The age-old idea of the starving artist is a sad, boring, and tired one. Better learn to talk about, position, pitch and sell what you make. This episode gives a road map to getting started.

I had the Lumineers on the show back in April. They’ve been on my radar for a while, probably one of my favorites right now. As anticipated they brought down the house for our privileged in-studio audience. Since that time they have been lighting up stages all over the globe – including an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in July. They are on their way to stardom and deserve every bit of love they get. Incredible artists with a rich sound that simply makes you smile.
